Nailed-on starters

I think Pogba is nailed on. Cavani is close but not quite nailed on.

Unlikely that Pogba wouldn't play, unless he was in the terrible form (which might in turn have been fitness related) of the start of the season. I think a fit Cavani would also be the presumptive starter. You could make strong arguments for Bailly and Greenwood based on current form. The midfielder next to Pogba would be the biggest uncertainty, and most dependent on the nature of the opposition.

The blanks in the OP's nailed on starters is dependent on the opposition.

If its City in the cup final, I would say Fred and McT are nailed on in midfield. If its Newcastle, I would say Pogba is nailed on. The choice of Bailly/Lindelof is dependent on the type of attack the opposition have.

I would say only Rashford is nailed on in our attack though.

This isn't intended to catch anyone out by the way. It's just something I'm putting out there to show why we may still lack a little consistency.

If we could get to eight nailed on starters then I think we'd see big gains again.

As RR said Pogba, Cavani and would be my pick too but having a top class DM would make it easier to plump for Pogba IMO.

De Gea, AWB, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Bruno and Rashford.

McFred always play big games whether they should or not.

12 months ago you'd say Pogba no chance, but based on his current form I think Pogba starts all his games for us just now. Cavani is very close to being a starter every game too, but think he's best off being rested here and there

People might not want to accept it but Lindelof starts when fit and has done for quite some time now. Think there are 8 players who start when fit, you could add Cavani at the moment but that's more based on form than clearly being the favoured striker for us.

It’s weird that people don’t think he’s a nailed on starter.

I thought people were picking their own nailed on starters and not necessarily who the manager would pick
In which case Lindelof would definitely not be a nailed on starter, for me anyway

To clarify I was picking my own based on the squad available. Ole did leave Lindelof out for Bailly for a spell a while back though too. Surely Ole has to see that Maguire looks a lot better when partnered with a more mobile partner?

Thing is if it was going to be a final we’d probably be sitting deep so Lindelof and Maguire would be preferable anyway.

We do need a more mobile partner for Maguire. But I’m unconvinced Bailly is the magic bullet people think he is, when fit. Lindelof’s a better defender. And it’s a more proven partnership. Our defensive issues are more than just the cb partnership. If Bailly was able to actually play a string of matches that would soon hit things home for some.

McT deserves to be a certain starter imo.

I'm more making the point we need someone to compliment Maguire. Could say the same for Lindelof as well really. They just don't click as a partnership IMO.

That's why I've said previously a CB, DM and RW are probably the key positions to sort next.

I take the point though about playing deep if we were in a final but I'm thinking best case scenario when we are confident enough in ourselves to play our game.

This is why we aren't going to win a league title soon.

If De Gea, Mctominay and Fred are certain starters, with two bang average centre backs, United have no hope.

In the summer we need a new goalkeeper, centre back, centre mid and striker. We might get 2 out of the 4, probably 1, so top 4 at best again next year.

We playing Southampton in the final then?

I do know what you mean. I’m not a fan of either really, but it’s not that bad as a partnership. There are many worse in the league.

I think it’s hard to compliment Maguire fully, though. He’s better at being the more passive of the two that you’ll often find in a partnership. The one that can clear up behind the more aggressive, front foot defender. You can see that with the differences in tackles compared to interceptions, he’s much better with the latter.

But it’s actually preferable to have a faster player clearing up behind him because he’s facking slow. It’s not so much of a problem when sitting deep, but will always be a problem when looking to leave space behind him.

Only first team quality United players are:

AWB
Maguire
Shaw

Matic
James
Pogba
Fred
Fernandes
DvdB
Mata
Cavani

The rest are just 'make do' or ordinary players at best.

And only 10 of those can all be the pitch at the same time.

You’d be slow too if you were carrying that head around
