I forget already, who took over after Wenger?

I think comparisons are a bit silly, it was clear the mess was coming even before Wenger left and it was largely one he and the club created by failing to address real needs to the squad year on year and buying luxuries instead.

Takes a Wolves fan to actually see there's nuance to this kind of thing and the rot that has set was brought about by and because of the Wenger regime. That said, Arteta is a mess.

Tellingly it was Wengers last season that he got his lowest point tally. The rot had set in and we all knew it would takes years to recover.

Thank goodness there are some sensible posters here capable of looking passed stats.

Replace Wenger with worse managers and that’ll happen.

Blimey even Wengers worst is still hard to match, thats crazy

It was the right decision to sack Wenger. However, neither Emery nor Arteta have managed to stop the haemorrhage. If anything, you could argue the wounds are getting deeper.

Where do you think we would be in the table if Wenger had stayed

7th. 8th. 9th maybe?

He might have dragged us to 4th, the teams above us aren't that good bar Man City. There's no way of knowing, but understandably those who wanted him out will say mid table or lower to feel justified...

With this squad? Wenger would probably have it in and around the top four. But you probably wouldn’t have this squad. It’s got even worse since he left. Even though Wenger caused a lot of these problems you’d always end up getting a few attackers that could get you to around 70 points.

I very much doubt we’d have done any better last season or the season before that.
This season however, with every team just as bad as the others, we’d have probably be 3-4 spots better of.

If Wenger were still Arsenal manager:

Ospina would be our no 1
Koscielny and Holding would be our first choice CB pairing, Kolasinac and Bellerin would be our full backs.

The midfield would be pretty much as is - though Guendouzi wouldn’t be out on loan.

Ozil would currently be negotiating an extension to his last deal. Auba and Laca would already both be extended.

AMN would’ve left, without having been given a chance. He’d probably be somewhere in the Championship. We would’ve let him go for free.

Martinez, similarly so. Only he’d now be making his way up the divisions in Spain - probably having signed for Real for £25m whilst us Gooners - who never got to see him play for us - moaned how we didn’t even get anything from having a sell on clause.

ESR would be out on loan. As would Saka.

We would, however, definitely have signed Willian. Though, unlike Arteta, Wenger would be insisting Willian’s performances have all been great.

When questioned whether he thought the fans might be right about it being time to move on, he’d be telling journalists he never walks out on a contact, and besides, how many football clubs have they ever managed?

We’d be comfortably outside the top 6, with Gooners getting excited every time a Twitter ITK mentions Nagelsmann’s name. Or even Eddie Howe.

Arteta has got many things wrong. But he is at least learning and, despite what people would love you to believe, progressing. Albeit slower than we want.

KSE are the real problem though. Whilst they own the club, any success we have will feel more by luck than judgement.

Fingers crossed then.

Agreed, I don't think our position says much about some of the teams above us.

We are just as good as United who are 2nd, so there's every reason to believe we could be up there, if certain referring decisions went our way, disallowed goals etc and if Auba was at the level of last season.

It’s a slight exaggeration, IAWT.

But we all it’s probably not that far from how things would be.

posted on 23/2/21

Yeah I’m not sure those things would have happened. I think Arsenal fans are really playing him down, he’s a better manager than Emery and Arteta. Just because he needed to go doesn’t mean everything would have carried on going really shiiiiit like it has. Wenger just gives more guarantees in the premier league than the two that have come after.

We certainly wouldn't have exiled all our creative attacking talent if Wenger was here. They would have been replaced immediately.

And that’s why you’d have been better had he stayed.

Yeah, but ultimately it would've just been a sticking plaster of sorts. We still wouldn't be near the top 4 spots, which is what he especially would've been judged on. And we still would've had crap players on expensive wages.

This gutting of the squad has been extremely satisfying, even if it's meant we've declined. Think we target better players now, and long may it continue. Think we'll improve a fair bit next season.

posted on 23/2/21

Yeah I do get that. I think you’d be near the CL places still, though. The bar wasn’t high.

I think the problem people seem to be having is that they are so convinced that Wenger needed to go, that they won’t accept that the replacements are worse. Both can be true.

I don’t think Arsenal have needed to gut the squad so much that it’s a midtable one, though. You could have bought better than you have since Wenger left.

Loads of other clubs have managed to really turn their teams around in a short space of time.
