I luckily had my running club agm on zoom to distract me from the carnage going on on the telly box

I hope Mengi is a fast learner. It’s tough being chucked in at centre half in a game like this.

Funny, mine was on Friday night which I ..... er.....skipped for the Notts game

To be fair to the team ... at 1-0 down I predicted it would be at least 5 by the end . So statistically we overperformed ??? I’m straw clutching here

I thought Beni looked ok in partnership with Watson, with Bird behind them. We played in better areas, the ball started going forward and Waggy did some decent holding-up work.
However, like Peeder said, the game was over as a contest by that time and perhaps Cardiff had eased up ?

On the old predictions the worse result predicted was a 2-0 loss.
So, you can say no-one saw this coming tonight.

Cardiff easing up definitely helped the subs. Praise for Watson from Rooney though.

When you get out thought tactically by Mick McCarthy it's time to consider a career change

A sign tonight that although Rooney has shown previously that he is more than willing to be pragmatic he has ambitions beyond that. Better quality players will be needed though.

Mengi may well be like Tomori. He had a season at right back at Hull and when he started with us he was quite dodgy, getting caught under the ball quite a lot. He learned. It’s harder for a young defender than an attacker because the stakes are higher. In a mid-table team he could learn his trade and if he is good enough he will progress. At either end of the table mistakes are more important.

I don’t think Rooney was out-thought by McCarthy. Mick did what Mick does. He doesn’t think. Rooney thought too much tonight.

Sorry, you're right I meant to put quote marks around it as I can't attribute the comments to myself but something I saw on Twitter

He looks a good season behind Tomori in his development.

I didn’t really see Tomori for Hull but the Derby Tomori looked to have more about him at this stage than the Derby Mengi. He is highly rated though. The difficulty is how to make use of these players who are still developing. Wisdom has been a stodgy but reliable performer at centre half and conceded few soft goals. If we were solidly mid-table and there was a prospect of getting Mengi for next season then maybe you bung him in and accept a few errors as part of the learning process. But we aren’t in a secure enough position to accept many errors.

Not sure about their respective ages, but Tomori showed flashes of his class in his very first game for us. Sure, there were mistakes, but they were ironed out pretty soon.

I thought Beningime looked capable of competing with Knight and Shinnie for a midfield spot. I reckon Edmundson could challenge Wisdom for right centre half but Mengi is not at the same level and Byrne vs Mengi is absolutely no contest. If Byrne was injured I would prefer moving Wisdom to right back and playing Edmundson. When Mengi played right back he didn’t look as good as Kornell McDonald. Still very early days though and a very tough game to play in tonight.

Morning After View :
Well I'm going to give the Management Team the benefit of the doubt here....and assume / hope that they decided to 'pick their battles' with the thought it would be ultimately better to get a result against Coventry (Saturday) than against Cardiff.
I think it was clear that some of the players needed a break. If that's the reason for making wholesale changes then I think I'd have put Fozzie in - replacing Buchanan who imo has looked a bit jaded of late.
The changes also allowed the 'fringe' players a chance to stake a claim. The outcome was unfortunately a bit of a disaster as nobody stepped up did they....and those that remained seemed really unsure as to what the game plan was.
For me it wasn't so much that Cardiff outplayed us - it was the fact we just rolled over. Marking seemed largely to not be there and the midfield / forward players as a whole were totally isolated - and we didn't start to play until we made the subsititutions. By then it was too late and it still didn't stop us conceding a lamentable 4th goal.
So an awful night for the fans -and an equally awful 5 hour trip home for the players. Will the Management have gleaned much from that. I doubt it...but it just shows yet again when we're not at it 100% we're a poor team.
The players for me who came out with any credit were Bird & Waggy when they came on - which allowed Beningame to show that he could be useful when better players are around him....
