Saw him play many times growing up. Was over the moon when he "stepped down" as a Pool player and made the move across to our side of the water to Tranmere, along with Tommy Lawrence.

In those days, kids could run on the pitch before kick-off to get autographs. Had a number of one-on-one chats with him whilst he signed.

Such a great player, and had the most infectious laugh, too. Put smiles on everyone's faces.

Thank you ISJ.

R.I.P. Saint

A tough nut he was on the pitch and I loved him on the box with Greavesie, of course. Who didn’t? I always liked him with his beaming smile and I’m saddened to hear this news.

Loved him on Saint and Greavsie. Seemed a top bloke as well as a top footballer. Condolences to his family.

Old enough to have seen him play at Maine Rd.
There was a story going around at the time ,possibly an urban myth , but at a church near Anfield , there was poster proclaiming 'Jesus saves' and someone had written underneath ' but St John knocks in the rebound '.
Myth or not, it's a good way to be remembered
RIP

Very sad news

He was part of the team that I fell in love with, all those years ago

Top class player, we often talk about managers changing the fortunes of a club but St John did more than most to elevate our club to a higher level.

As for his career after football, well he became even more loved by fans. That duo with Greavsie was the stuff of legends. I can’t think of a better footie programme.

Fabulous player, and very sad news. Him and Yeats coming in were two of Shankly's greatest ever signings imo.

To know that you can’t be that much younger than me. If at all.

A class act. Saw him play quite a lot in the 60's. A proper footballer. RIP Saint.
