He very clearly wasn’t fit when his season began, which shouldn’t have been a surprise to anyone.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
agreed, yet at the time there were posters asking such incisive questions as "does being unfit mean he can't make a 5 yard pass?", and even now people use those games as evidence of him being a "liability", whereas no one judges bailly on his part in spurs' 3rd (?) goal, which for me is one of the worst goals we have conceded in years, and people are more than happy to label him our best defender.

i find the narratives around pogba utterly bizarre, even the beginning of this season it was "he can't play in a 2", despite that being exactly what he did at the end of last season (6W 2D from our last 8 games).
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think that was probably a hangover from earlier periods in his United career when he really did struggle in a two.

If I had to play a two man midfield every week, I still wouldn’t be picking him there against certain sides, because he isn’t as effective and reliable defensively in the double pivot as Fred or McT.

He has improved that side of his game, for sure, but I’d still be using him in there on a horses-for-courses basis. Otherwise in a diamond, or, at a push, off the left as Ole has since the Spurs and Arsenal losses.

Rafael Varane being linked to us today.

Probably not possible but surely a no brainer if he is available.

his injury problems seem a lot better than they were, as do ours, so i could get on board with this.

No idea how injured he is now days, I was surprised he's still 27 tbh I assumed he was older than that. Can't see it happening and I expect him and Real will agree on his salary eventually but he's an elite level CB so would be brilliant if it were possible.

wouldn't think this is 100% accurate, but has him down as having missed 7 games in the last 3 years:

Yes

Varane has 'apparently' told Madrid he wants a new challenge and isn't interested in staying there. Could well be contract negotiation tactics of course.

Looks a no brainer if he's leaving. 27 and only one year on his contract. Probably get him for no more than 45 to 50m.

Would be the perfect partner for Maguire.

Good with his feet, great in the air, pace to burn.

No chance we’ll get him

Too good to be true.

We'll buy Keane back from Everton or Ben White or something, and pay more than that.

I don't envisage our transfer kitty will be very big again. Whoever we sign needs to work. We can't afford more gaffs.

Hopefully Pogba can tap him up in his DM's or on the France Whatsapp group before Kante does for Chelsea.

Has played 24 out of 25 in the league this season and over 30 games in the previous two.

Doesn’t seem too injury prone.

I’d be shocked if it happened but who knows.

Madrid and Barca are still trying to get their players to take paycuts in the aftermath of Covid. That could play into our hands with Varane.

I agree it still feels too good to be true though. Would be a fantastic signing if we could do it.

I don’t expect we’ll spend net more than £50m this summer given the (shocking) state of our finances.

Varane would be all of that if it were to happen.

But surely PSG and Chelsea would be in for him, and Bayern and Juve will both desperately need CBs this summer.

I agree. I'd be shocked if we had a net spend of more than 60 to 70m.

Seen so many fans spouting lists of players for 200m. It's just so unrealistic given the state of the world right now.

There will be one 'stellar' signing for us tops. Probably will be a CB but wouldn't rule out a Striker either.

good to see the usual levels of enthusiasm for the news that one of our best players may be staying at the club.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is he??
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yes, he is. you didn't notice for instance that for the 2 months before getting injured every time he shared the pitch with bruno he was the better player? i mean, not consistently, but every single time?

and as for being a defensive liability, knock yourself out and go and look at some stats, they may surprise you (eg more successful tackles this season than matic or mctominay, more clearances than fred or matic, and more total defensive involvement than any of our other midfielders, mainly because he is excellent in the air)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is highly selective thinking. I can think of 2 games where he was distinctively average and led to penalties, fouls that led to a loss. Bruno's poor game is a goal and assist, Pogba's poor game is directly contributing the mistake than leads to a loss.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
When Bruno is poor he is poor let’s not mask that
