From those listed, I’d say it’s a tie between Eric and Giggs.

Loved Keane as a player though, and would probably put him top of my list.

I have a feeling not many Utd fans would vote for Rooney.

I don't know if anyone else feels conflicted in the same way, but I kind of feel guilty for not holding Rooney in higher esteem. Objectively, he's a United great. Scored so many goals for us. Scored so many great goals. A cornerstone of the most successful Fergie side. A team player, hard worker, willing to graft when given defensive responsibilities that put someone else in the limelight.

I don't think the noises about leaving particularly sour things. I think we mark him down above all because our expectations were so high when he came onto the stage as basically a fully developed, fine footballer at such a young age. We're used to a certain career trajectory, and Rooney didn't follow that. (Actually, his game did become more refined, more efficient, but he didn't look like he was growing as a footballer.) I think we lack a bit of love for Rooney because he committed the crime of showing the most exciting scene of the film in the first five minutes. The rest of his career was consistent and of course tailed off as he slowed down. It wasn't a satisfying narrative arc. I think that's why he's not around the top of these lists, and it's not really fair.

Perhaps you could have put in brackets next to Giggs "(before he was caught shaagging his brother's wife)"?

Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo interchanging up front was poetry at one point... clever footballers playing off one other

I am a Tottenham fan, not a Utd fan so I don’t have a personal affinity with any of those players in relation to my experiences of supporting the club. My choice of favourite is based purely on which footballer I enjoyed watching the most, and the answer is Ronaldo.

Scholes would be second, exceptional talent. Cantona I appreciate why he’s a favourite among Utd fans , and he has some iconic moments to his name. He’d be third. I am less fussed by the other two, particularly Giggs.

If you asked me the same question about THFC my answer would be more informed by players I watched growing up going to WHL who arguably wouldn’t make the pantheon of all time greats, such as Ginola for example.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That makes sense.

Now I'm trying to think about who my favourite Spurs players have been over the years. Quite possibly Modric. Currently I'm a huge admirer of Son, and can't quite understand why he isn't a bigger superstar.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Son's form has picked up a lot in the last year or 2, and with that I think he's gained more admirers. Before then he was still a very good player but always behind the likes of Kane, Eriksen and Alli.

I'll see your Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo and raise you a Rooney, Saha and Ronaldo. I think the latter combo was even better with Saha's superior speed and movement. It's a lasting source of regret to me that his injury issues robbed him of a longer United career.

Eric, Giggsy, Wazza, Ginge and Ronaldo in that order.

Ask me tomorrow and I would probably change it.

You're better positioned than I am to judge that. I think there's probably also an element of footballers breaking into the wider cultural sphere as stars if they are either English (therefore of interest to the casual football fan who follows the World Cups and Euros) or flamboyant in their off-field persona. The tabloids are never going to monetise content about a humble, clean-cut Korean dude. Where his career really went wrong was the point where he decided against getting someone from Made in Chelsea pregnant.

I don't think it's that so much. If you're good enough then you will get the adulation no matter the nationality, and it's definitely true that his form picked up within the last few years to being good enough to warrant that adulation. He went from an inconsistent but top player who was even unfairly called "clown shoes" by some of our fans, to being a consistent world class player who sharpened up his game, became more clinical in front of goal and a game changer. To the point that we now don't just talk about Kane anymore, we talk about Kane and Son.

Not a bad shout that. On Rooney not being appreciated, he got plenty of love away at Derby in the cup that time

Yeah, I enjoyed that. I was with the away fans in hoping he scored that late free kick. Maybe there will be a critical reappraisal of his career. Familiarity breeds contempt; absence breeds fondness.

Loved him when he was younger, the sheer passion, aggression and raw ability was something special.

Has to be Cantona for me too. Not just for the sublime things he did on the pitch (which others have matched). But he led us to the promised land with that mixture of swagger, charisma and (for want of a better way of describing it) a sort of yearning for transcendental that you only see rarely in an athlete. The most important single player of Ferguson's era at United, setting the tone for our dominance over two decades. Arguably, therefore, the most important player of the PL era overall (which is not to say the best).

In second place I'd have Robbo. When I was seven or eight years old I basically wanted to be him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Always found in retrospect Cantona's technical ability a bit underrated. He was an absolute magician of a footballer the likes we rarely see these days. He was always doing little flicks for the most part came off. He was pure entertainment but also had that end product. Absolute class

As it currently stands after 23 votes
9 Cantona
7 Scholes
4 Rooney
3 Ronaldo
0 Giggs

It is very subjective and everyone's favourite is personal.
It is generational as well as to which players have had the most influence on you.

Some good debate

Early Giggs was terrific to watch. Scored a great goal against Spurs when he rounded the keeper and scored from an angle.

We were sat in the home seats behind the goal for that game, having scalped some tickets outside. We were keeping very quiet and didn't jump up to celebrate. Literally hundreds of other United fans in the same stand did though.

The natives weren't happy, harsh words ensued.

I can't pick between any of them as they're all my favourites.

If you had Beckham on the list I'd have picked him though

least favourite player of that lot would be more interesting
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Funnily enough... I voted Ronaldo, but he'd probably be my least favourite too By that, I suppose I mean that he's the one that I might have disliked if he'd played for another PL team and not us.

I voted for him mainly because I think he's the best player we've had, certainly in my lifetime. The 2007-09 squad was ridiculous and even then he stood out. You've got to admire his dedication and work ethic as well, plus my time in Portugal means that I tend to like our Lusophone players.

How far have we fallen that we need to reminisce our past at least 10 years ago to remember our favorite players. Imagine Real Madrid or Barcelona fans going through such spells of mediocrity
