“What is to be thought of a nation boasting of its liberty, boasting of its humanity, boasting of its Christianity, boasting of its love of justice and purity, and yet having within its own borders three millions of persons denied by law the right of marriage?… I need not lift up the veil by giving you any experience of my own. Every one that can put two ideas together, must see the most fearful results from such a state of things…”

It’s a nice quote and he was positive force for the American change on slavery but I don’t see how it relates to the conversation about the UK. The guy was 14 when our country had abolished slavery. We probably inspired him as we did many other people and nations.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Self congratulation about abolishing a trade 'we' exacerbated and profited from for 100s of years is cringe. Acknowledging 'our' role in abolition is historical but not something that should, imo, be celebrated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’re entitled to that opinion of course but I like I said I give a lot of credit to those that enact change. How many millions more would have suffered if we hadn’t led that change? Would America or countless other countries had ended their practices later? I think so. Would millions more have suffered? I think so.
Is it therefore something to be proud of as opposed to carrying out a legal and morally accepted practice at the time? I think so.

I wouldn’t use the word celebrate, that’s you being hyperbolic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In context, celebrate doesn't mean throw a party, but you knew that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you proud of Ireland or Scotland?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
WTF?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is it ok to be a proud Scot or Irish person?

We always focus on Engerland or America.

So parochial and tiresome.

England gets it daily here, so let us expand horizons.

Then we can do China and India and Iraq.

I never said they were synonymous.

This whole thing could've been avoided if you'd just said what you meant instead of trying to make yourself look clever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don’t worry petal, I used your exact words also.

You don’t get to dictate how I make my points on British history with slavery. I was giving people the opportunity to say something along the lines of ‘if you mean that we were heavily involved in ending slavery in the modern world then ok but for me personally it doesn’t outweigh our involvement in it’.

But no, you chose to label it as ignorant instead of asking a question. I was just leading you to exemplify part of your apparent nature, assumptive and closed-minded.

As to ‘wasting time’ if you don’t want to waste your time, then stop replying? Why should I or anyone else not post how we feel about the topic or what you or others have posted? To not waste your time? Don’t make me laugh, it’s a forum.

When we are having a pop at the UK or being British, hich is cool, could we at least be honest and admit we are not talking about Wales or Scotland or even NI, but a Tory English bogeyman in your heads.

It is cool to be Nationalist or patriotic if you are Welsh, Scots or Irish.

All of whom have our shared history, benefiting from slavery and empire and playing an active role.

Just to clarify.

Are you reading other opinion and not in a safe space.

Will this help?

England is racist and bin the monarchy.

Hang the Tories and white silence is violence.

What about that Trump..

Is that better?

In the 90’s they leaked to the press how Princess Diana was shouting at staff and scaring them.

Like any long running band, they’re not playing any new material, they’re just recycling their greatest hits.

I’m not at all interested in her race. I doubt she’s the disgusting POS that some make her out to be but she’s the daughter of a Hollywood DP (director of photography) so she’s likely to be somewhat vacuous but that’s for Harry, not me. It seems quite clear to me that the Royal family set out the rules to her and Harry (ie act like Wills & Kate) and they weren’t having any of it and it probably got heated and evolved into what we’re seeing today with both sides poking sticks at each other. Overall, it’s petty soap opera stuff just with royalty as opposed to Corrie or Eastenders style.

How was she scaring them?

Threatening them with the rack in the tower FFS.

Personally I don't give a fook about the royals. If folk are proud of them , enjoy. One thing I will say is the queens visit over here certainly helped Anglo irish relations.

Also Will and Kate seem like decent enough people as well.

On the slavery subject we should all be allowed keep at least 3
