Where did it all go wrong? I honestly believe that that side would be currently in the top six.

Not really progressing are we?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t think that team would be in the top 6 if Jimenez missed three quarters of the season, Jonny missed more than half the season and Boly missed more than two months. Mid table I reckon
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I accept what you say about injuries but that wasn't really in the my thinking when I posted that team. I probably didn't explain it very well but the point that I was making was that if we still had Bennett, Doherty and Jota and with Boly in his natural position, that side (when all fit) d be far stronger than what we have now (even if Jimenez was fit) and would be competing with the best. in-form teams in the league.
In short, I suppose what I am saying is that we have not adequately replaced Bennett, Doherty, Jota or Jimenez and as a result, are weaker now than we were.

the annoying thing about posters reactions here is the assumption of entitlement that we finish top 6, with seemingly no regard to the fact that we've achieved that once in the last 50 years. we're also without the 3 scorers of 69% of our goals last season and our 2 best defenders have missed much of this season..
for most of our history to be 12 th in the top tier would be something to proud of, even amazed at..

I do accept that point gem I just think injuries are the only reason we will finish lower down the league this season. A fully fit Wolves squad is I think better than Villa and could easily be up with Leicester. I think Semedo is improving and I do think Fabio will improve but selling Doc and Jota and not replacing Bennett certainly didn’t help us progress this season

Big game for the Baggies right now. If they can’t beat Newcastle then any survival hopes become pretty remote. The geordies themselves would be also in trouble if they lost this one though

Dion Sanderson getting repeated motm votes for Sunderland and he scored for them yesterday. Sunderland want to sign him permanently and a number of championship teams also interested. Now even premier league teams Palace and Brighton watching him. Hope we get to see him in pre season games for Wolves in the summer to see if he is good enough

What a shock that you are ignoring the fact teams we are as good as like Leicester have had more injuries this season than us.

Truth is we have just had a normal season for injuries. No worse than any other club has experienced over the last few years, other than ourselves in the two seasons just gone.

We gambled that our luck would continue, but it was always going to run out eventually.

It all just highlights the stupidity of the clubs approach to stretching the squad so thinly, and having no back ups for key positions. All but one poster on here could see the likely outcome, if we had just two or three long term injuries to key players. It was all so predictable.

Unless we invest heavily in the squad over the next 2 windows, we are going to seriously regress in my view.

Nice and balanced, just how I like it. Mr 'i am the most balanced poster on here' thinks it is injuries and literally nothing else.

Me? Culmination of several things. Injuries never help but then that falls on the club not doing adequately in the transfer windows. Our style being 'found out' for want of a better term, being far too predictable and becoming very easy to defend against. Players off form, Donk the big one, Boly also poor prior to missing games, conceded four twice with him in the side which is new for us. Fans has an impact in terms on intensity but of course that goes for all clubs. Also Nuno making errors, a back four at the wrong times and of course the style of play is his and his alone.

Ten to go, hopefully we learn a few things and particularly regarding those we still have an option to buy like Aït-Nouri and Vitinha, 40 million those two will cost and I would be surprised if we sign both.

Of course what’s compounded things for Wolves is having a thin squad but it’s not so much the volume of injuries that knocks clubs back it’s the loss of key players. Other clubs have probably had a higher volume of injuries to players who probably wouldn’t have been picked anyway. We have lost our best player for most of the season, our best defender for over two months and other important players like Podence and Jonny for long periods.

Interesting to look at teams who have slipped this season due to the long term loss of just one key player.

Palace have lost .97 points per game when Zaha doesn’t play
Sheffield Utd .85 without O’Connell
Newcastle .84 without Saint Maximin
Wolves .75 without Jimenez
Liverpool .69 without Van Dijk

No matter how good a squad you have, if your best player is out for a long time it makes a difference. We aren’t many points down on this time last season and if Jimenez had just had a normal injury rather than a season ending one, we would have made up those points

posted on 7/3/21

Absolute nonsense.

Nobody is arguing Jimenez is a big loss but to suggest everything would be normal with him is ridiculous. Each season is different so comparing points totals to a previous season means little also.

posted on 7/3/21

Rest assured Nuno and the club won't be sat now saying 'ah well, it's only injuries or else everything would be normal'. They will be analysing all facets of the season and recognising where errors have been made. Nuno to his credit has said we need to do more in an attacking sense which was part of the reason behind delving into a back four.

Looks like beating Liverpool next week will be one of the easiest predictions of the season.

Watching Cavaleiro today makes me wonder why we sold him and bought Traore. He looks for the ball and does loads of running after it.
Adama would do well to take a look.

posted on 7/3/21

That in essence is the problem with Traore. I think he has been spoiled by the deadly accurate diagonal balls from Coady. If the ball doesn't land at his feet or hit him in the chest, he can't be bothered to chase it. It's almost as though he is incapable of sprinting with the ball.

Amazing run for Liverpool, six straight defeats at home after being unbeatable for four years. Highlights what confidence does for a team.

posted on 7/3/21

We should have cashed in on Traore last summer, probably worth half of that peak value already.

Makes you wonder how many points we'd now be on had we had a fit Jiminez banging in the goals.

Yeah I see that. Another excellent season. Only injuries being the problem. We should give away Saiss and Cavaleiro etc etc. Absolutely clueless

As for calm and measured. I haven't lost my shat all season, very calm about it all. Just disappointed as anyone with any spirit in them would be. Top six is gaping wide open, we finished seventh twice in a row and best placed to exploit that gap but yet we are languishing in the bottom half apparently thanks to one single injury to Jimenez.

Interesting that you took my "calm and measured" comment as a slight on you. I was thinking more of the reactionary knee-jerk type that frequent many boards.
