Sad news. Though 97 is a good run.
Former Formula 1 commentator Murray Walker has died at the age of 97.
RIP
I didn't realise he was that old, must have been working well into his 80's.
Sad times. Terrific commentator who really added a level of excitement to even the most mundane of races
There’s not many commentators that truly are the voice of their sport but he definitely was.
AND THERE GOES...Murray Walker!
RIP Legend
No more fitting tribute than a compilation of some of his finest moments: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnXDEw3gqhk
My personal favourite: It's Escorts 1-2-3, not surprisingly because it's all Escorts in this race race.
Oh that's sad. RIP Murray
I remember when commentating with James Hunt he used his usual " Unless I'm very" etc " X? has just passed Y?." to which Hunt replied "Yes you are mistaken, it was actually Z?" Can'r remember the names of the drivers actually involved but it was a typical laconic Hunt comment amid Walker's usual enthusiastic hysteria.
Murray was one of those commentators that I have listened to for much of my life, an icon of commentating but probably made as many mistakes as David Coleman.
Other greats:
Clive Everton - Snooker
Ken Wolstenholme - Football
Peter Allis - Golf
Harry Carpenter - Boxing
Bill McLaren - Rugby Union
Eddie Waring - Rugby League
John Arlott - Cricket
Brian Johnson - Cricket
Peter O'Sullivan - Horse Racing
Agnew will be up there for cricket as well soon. It is an easier game to commentate on because of its pace but you still have to know your.stuff to captivate the audience.

Don't know if you ever watch the darts but Sid Waddell was pretty excellent in that role. Walker probably would be my favourite commentator across all sports though.

BBC says he retired in 2001?! That’s mad. What a legend.
Farewell Murray and thankyou for everything
