I imagine West Ham will value Rice at around 3 times the price we value Lingard.

Whatever the differential, I guess it's a lot narrower than it was before Lingard's loan move.

Still a bit unsure on Rice... Certainly an upgrade for that position, but a bit uninspiring, though I can't claim to watch too much of West Ham.

I just want a Carrick type... where have they gone?

Just move lindeloff or Maguire into midfield to achieve the same effect as buying Rice....

Fantastic. They can have Jesse on a free.

Ed would admire your financial acumen. Can we replace Matt Judge with Diafol?

It’s hardly like there’s been an abundance of Carrick types over the past 30 years. Very few players can do that role as well as Carrick did it.

They have also said that United are to make about £4m on the loan should this deal happen.

Rare as hen's teeth, but those type of players have been vital to some of the very best teams... UTD with Carrick, Barca with Busquets (the best), Real with Modric (not quite the same role, but similar in his later years).

Average, sideways-passing, one dimensional, slow and lethargic crab.

According to the JA606 United board. Until he retired.

Not a bad player, not a great player. Will cost well more than he's worth so no doubt will happen.

Will improve United's midfield. Kinda like Matic when he could get about with less technical ability.

I don't recall Carrick being so widely admired during his playing years. Not that he's a player who 'gets better the less he plays', more a case of not appreciating him until he's gone. Maybe it also takes received wisdom a while to catch up with paradigm shifts in football. Roy Keane was our stereotype of the midfield lynchpin, and at first glance you might see the more understated approach of Carrick as 'not doing much'. I remember people similarly questioning what Modric brought to the table when he was at Spurs, and a lot of people thinking Busquets was a one dimensional footballer. I don't remember seeing these views recently.

According to around 6 vocal, smooth brained UTD "fans" on the JA606 United board. Until he retired.

I think there were a lot of people who assumed that Scholes carried Carrick. It wasn’t until Scholes moved on and MC became the man for us that people realised how good he was.

Carrick was absolutely torn to pieces on the United board for literally years.

I've wanted Rice at United for over a year, I hope we get him.

Rice looked all set for Chelsea until Lampard got the boot according to some decent journos. Maybe Tuchel not as keen.

I'd definitely be happy if we got him. Fred is not a DM nor is he a footballer. He's just a great advert for Duracell. He never stops running.

I think he will stay at Westham though. The price will put many off.

Apparently lampard wanting rice so much was a cause of tension between him and the board, who thought it'd be embarrassing to sign an ex academy player for a shed load of cash after releasing him

I would sack him too for that. Losing your job over a clogger

On Carrick

He was very good at what he did. Unfortunately it is what he didn’t do which held him back from being a better player.

VC is unreconstructed in his Carrick scepticism, and not ashamed to say it.

TBF Robb championed Carrick on here a lot.

In fact I think he first joined here as a poster called Carrickature (or something like that).
