The Fred paradox

Yes. Very well put.

Just before he scored I was thinking he was having a pretty poor game with misplaced passes etc. However, he does add an energy to the team. We do need an upgrade but if he could sharpen up some aspects of his game, and pass the ball in a tidier fashion more consistently, then that need may not be as urgent.

I don't know what to make of him. Keane was right last night saying he was dreadful up until the goal.

Yesterday pretty much summed him up. Spent one half impersonating Djemba-Djemba and the other looking like the second coming of Essien.

He is very much like Pogba where he is either good or bad with no between.

Obviously Pogba has more good.

Brazilian Jay Spearing.

He is comically erratic in his play. It wasn't on display yesterday, but he's even shown a nifty ability to nutmeg people and get out of trouble with a little piece of skill or a trick that does genuinely make it seem as though he is Brazilian. Then he'll spoon a pass that any Sunday League player makes without issue or he gives away a dopey and senseless foul in a dangerous area.

And that's his biggest problem; you never know which Fred you're going to get. In fact that's probably not even true - you tend to get all of them at various stages during 90 minutes!

I think it's fair to say he has a number of useful attributes that any midfield would benefit from having, but that the overall quality and consistency of his play on the ball leaves you feeling as though we could do better. As in interesting comparison, just think about how you feel watching Fred receive the ball from the CB's deep in our own half versus how you feel when Scholes or Carrick would collect the ball in the same position...

A more learned poster would have put "O Gato do Schrodinger" for Fred to understand when he logs in later.

RR has made a right mug of himself here.

I can only imagine the matchthread in that first half hour, I was ready to join in the bloodshed.. Fred was incredibly bad... Great second half though and I felt true joy when he scored and when Bruno pushed him over

MU52, I knew I'd hate myself for it, but once the pun popped into my mind, I had no choice.

He’s symptomatic of the team, in that he can look so bad and then completely flip that within the space of a few minutes and play really well. Though I suppose the argument you could make is that him being like this does lead to our Jekyll and Hyde performances - when the midfield is on top and executing their game well we play better.

I agree, he can be equally $hit and brilliant all at once

He’s Shilliant

One of the best midfielders in the world at the moment if we win. The worst player to ever pull on a United shirt if we lose. I have never seen him play.

His biggest strength is running without the ball

combine his manic energy with VDB's dummies and you've got the best off the ball player in the world.

that it all turns to sh!t when either of them has the ball is irrelevant.

I put this shocking stat in another thread:

Fred completed more passes [60] and made more ball recoveries [11] than any other player on the pitch vs. Spurs.

I had a feeling he would score, all those practice shots in every match had to pay off one day

annoyingly though those 60 completed passes were from 874 attempted passes

Those stats aren’t that surprising. He usually make the most ball recoveries on the team and completes a lot of passes.

Was mentioned on sky yesterday that hes had 86 shots on goal since he signed and he has scored 2 goals.
