The reactions to Bielsa

that last comment is maybe a bit OTT.

as i mentioned on another comment, you have lost as many games as you have won this season in the PL.

while i think as a team you are good to watch, i do think that at times Bielsa needs to be less rigid in his approach to games.

take the defeat to us at Old Trafford... 2 nil down within 3 minutes and still there was no change to the way you played and you ended up conceding 6.

as long as that keeps happening then the pundits are probably correct, you will have hit your ceiling

Eh? I’ve never seen a manager get praised for getting thrashed like Bielsa.

what i do find a bit strange ( other than his bucket) is the fact that after nearly 3 years at the club he still is unable to conduct an interview in English

And I've never seen a manager get criticised so much for having a newly promoted team in midtable.

We had some heavy defeats this season, what team hasn't?

It's going to happen when you come up against teams with players that cost more than our whole club. When Sean Dyche gets hammered 5 nil every season at Man City, I don't hear anyone say they need to change their approach. It's just - oh well it's a tough game.

The idea that Bielsa changes nothing game to game is wrong. The system does change and certain games we do different things, just the punditry on TV is so simplistic, they can't comprehend it.

You add better players into this system and the ceiling goes higher. This is what Bielsa is achieving with playing Stuart Dallas as a CM in the PL, after he was an average Championship winger just 3 years ago.

Guardiola said it in his interview prematch - you give Bielsa the squad of Man City and he'd win titles as well.

what would be the point of bielsa changing in that game.
close up shop, 10 men behind the ball? only lose 3-0.
who cares. we took a hit that day, lost to a better team.
the important thing is the belief and fight of the players. we are getting our better players back that were injured and as we fill the gaps more next season we will be harder and harder to beat but will still entertain our fans with exciting football.
we've gone though twenty something managers in twenty years. we hit the jackpot with bielsa and we've only hit our ceiling if we were to sit pat and not strengthen each window.
the change in our team over the last 3 years is mind blowing. these are to a great degree the same players that finished mid table championship 4 years ago.
the rise is steady.
i wouldn't want to see what pep or klopp could do with us on a limited budget when i already know what bielsa brings.
i think you can't understand what it feels like to be a leeds fans with bielsa in charge after what we've been through the last 16 years.

Reduces the risk of being misquoted I suspect is the motive. He does speak english, possibly not fluent enough for media jackals to twist.

I'm not convinced any other manager, Pep, Ole, Jose or Klopp could take a mid-table champ bunch of players, add a few but not many additions and turn them into a mid-Prem team. We get some bad results, but by and large we give most teams a good game.

Excellent article Jonty.

I honestly think that it is only Leeds supporters who understand Bielsa and the incredible changes that have happened in 3 years under his leadership.

These cliches are rattled out any time we lose and a few pundits and other supporters can only remember the heavy defeats.

Football has been wonderful, we have 45 points with 7 games to go, have subtley changed our style and are enjoying every match

Will be incredible if he signs on for another 2 years

Ignore these clowns. Leeds have a quality side and a good first season back in the Prem.

what was ole and jose saying the other day about not feeding their children. i didn't understand it but i think it was english.

He is one of the top managers in the world, never mind the premiership.
The critics cannot name any other manager who would come to a mid table second tier team, and transform them into a premiership team playing wonderful football that everyone admires.
I have been a season ticket holder for over 50 years and to see us playing like we are is tremendous and I wouldn't swap our manager for anyone.

This is the problem with getting used to watching negative, poor football for so long, just no understanding of the game. We might have conceded 6 that day, but we beat man city with the same tactics.

Over the season, it's worked. I mean we have basically a team who finished 13th in the 2nd tier a few seasons ago, on the same points as Arsenal.

hahahaha,wow... you might wanna look at yourself when reading that first comment... what a plank.

against us you had more possession and 17 shots

against city you had 28% possession and 2 shots

you made nearly double the passes int he game against us than against city

those performances were chalk and cheese.

The perception of some opposition fans is formed I think from not understanding the mess we've been through regarding owners, managers and any semblance of a decent player being sold.

From not understanding that and being able to then see first hand the integrity and change that Bielsa has brought.

Yes we've had losses and some big ones, but then this season behind closed doors has thrown up all sorts of results and we're miles away from what we had pre Biesla under Heck, although of course the spine of that side is what we see today.

Jose and Pep are great managers, winning things at highest level. Klopp too and what a character.

But Bielsa has done this with existing players, has done this without ever knocking a referee, without ever blaming a player, with a style of football that is really what people pay to see.

What Bielsa has done goes beyond football. He has united a city. How many cities has X amount murals painted across postcodes. Not just Bielsa but the players as well.
He has got the players playing possibly the best football they ever will with a temperament that is not seen around that much.
Even some of the families of the players have become household names to fans of the club because what he has achieved has been embraced by everyone around him.

The thing is with the losing as many as winning is, a Championship club can beat a Premiership club in the odd Cup game!..

We're well behind the top Premier league teams as far as quality goes and have just started the catch up game!..

"what i do find a bit strange ( other than his bucket) is the fact that after nearly 3 years at the club he still is unable to conduct an interview in English"

dunc, I've lived here since 82, since 87 out of the Army, I know how embarrassing it is getting something wrong when leaning a new language, so it wouldn't be fun doing that in front of x-however many waiting for your thoughts!..

Feck, I still embarrass myself these days with the odd word and my accent, I hate it when people ask which part of Holland I come from!..

Sometimes managers just fit certain clubs and situations. I wouldnt swap Bielsa for any other manager both current or past in the history of the game. Simply because i couldnt see anyone else achieving more than what he has in his short time here by playing amazing football and just being an absolute great bloke also

But what is oles style? You’ve played terrible footy under him for the majority of his time at the club. You’ve got a billion pound team and yet most of the time look average, it’s just you have those world class players to get you over line and mask how very average he is. End of the day, your an arm chair fan and probably have little knowledge of the game.

It may be that Bielsa has now accepted the need, sometimes, and maybe only rarely, to prioritise defence - to defend a slim lead with only 15 minutes left to play, or when we get a red card. That second half against City was truly extraordinary!

He seems to be a rare thing - a man with real integrity. It is said that all men have their price but I'm not sure that's true of Marcelo Bielsa. The proof of the pudding is in the eating - he's taken a mid-table Championship squad and transformed them into a mid-table PL squad in three years without breaking the bank.

Of course many in the sporting media will be just waiting for him and us to crash and burn. Maybe they don't really understand what integrity is.
