No one is questioning why Barcelona is up so high when they're hemorrhaging money left and right?

I did wonder that tbh.

I thought about that too.

I’m too sure, to be honest. I suspect it would be due to new kit deals, and being in the CL giving them a better base to work from commercially.

I think you can criticise the Glazers as this gap will obviously be easier to close due to how poor we’ve been on the pitch, which they’ve been responsible for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes but not solely responsible. The players and managers had a little something to do with it too.

The answer is probably in here somewhere...

I have to listen to Simon Jordan on Talksport trying to explain away the Barcelona finance
conundrum every day to Jim White. Quite badly

To be clear, the point I was making is that a number of fans credit the Glazers with overseeing a remarkable rise in revenue, which it is claimed the club would not have achieved without their business acumen. The point about our domestic rivals inevitably catching up is a fair one, but that also supports the point that the football industry has been booming and the growth has been exploited by all of the big clubs, not just (and not chiefly) United.

Yeah but the buck stops with them for appointing that useless cuuuuunt Ed Woodward.

I know it does and that’s one criticism of them that I will wholeheartedly accept. I just don’t agree with the ‘parasite’ type comments.

I suspect we will drop further down as success reduces and city will grow. There is no ceiling and when city smash past us, what ceiling will it be then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Once Pep goes, City will be just another rich club like PSG and Chelsea. The odd title every few years but nothing like the dominance they have under Pep.

One thing that will show us what’s what is if Liverpool don’t resume their on the pitch performances and then drop down this league table a lot more than we have done then again I think we have to perhaps give some more credit to our commercial performance.

Barca seem to have a bump because of the Enterprise Value methodology. That takes their equity plus their net debt (significantly high) to get a portion of their valuation. Their revenues is about $150m more than us, guessing it's coming from the TV deal. I guess it sorta makes sense on that front...

However, with the news of their financial woes, I'm surprised to see their Debt/Value ratio is 6% where United is at 16% and we don't have a debt problem that is as severe as theirs.

I remember we had a similar conversation recently RR and it is completely fair to point out the outrageous growth in football generally during their ownership.

Perhaps a good measure of their performance to either justify the claim that their business acumen was extremely important or to debunk said claim would be to compare where United were in 2005-2013 (to take out the pitch performance issues) with the other top teams.

Our growth in terms of percentage vs say Barca, Madrid, Bayern and some local teams like Arsenal (although they suffered a pitch performance issue tbf) Chelsea, Liverpool. Chelsea would probably be the fairest domestic comparison.

I’ll have a butchers and see what I can dig up.

So revenue in millions (euros) from 04/05 season to 13/14 season was

243
315
325
327
350
367
396
424
518

113% growth in revenue during that time

Madrid went from 292 to 549

88% growth

Barcelona the data on statista only goes back to 2009 😭 😭😭😭
Edit: 259m to 484m
87% growth

Chelsea only goes back to 2008 😭😭😭😭
Edit: 221 to 387.9

75% growth

Bayern went from 202 to 528!
161% growth

And I’m bored of this now, revenue isn’t the pure indication of value of the club as we know and I can’t be bothered to do Italian clubs either but Bayern Munich aside we’ve increased revenue proportionately more than the others most notably Madrid & Barcelona but also Chelsea who also had their most successful period during those years.

I know it’s not a perfect metric I’m using but I’m not Ernst & Young, Deloitte or KPMG! So sue me!

Oh no maybe they’re ok. I can’t think straight.

I took the increase amount and made a percentage of what it was for the first figure. Oh dear I need a cigarette.

How else can you describe people who pay themselves nigh on £20m in dividends whilst the club is posting record losses, then panic dump a huge chunk of their shares right before even worse figures are published?

They’re leeches, plain and simple.

They are business people.

Its the price we pay for all the success we have had as a result of us being floated back under Edwards.

A thesaurus would give us even more adjectives to describe them, rosso.
