cheap shot?

I would have watched last nights game, I didn’t bother cos there’s nothing at stake now. Finishing top four means nothing. The remainder of this season really is just a series of BCD friendlies.

The last bit of footballs soul has been ripped out by six mega rich Billionaires. Football is dead.

RIP ⚽️

Jaz, I'm not a fan of squads wearing t shirts to send messages in first place, but thought last nights stunt of putting them in Liverpool dressing room too was ill conceived.

This isn't the Liverpool players or managers fault and they were never going to wear them, utterly pointless waste of money.

You can tell me that sport has become a business, and I would probably agree with you, but the true spirit of sport, which has made it so enduring is competition, playing or watching the game we love, taking on all comers.

This ESL is anti sport, American nonsense. Are there any great American global sporting teams? That’s because sport has been eaten by business in the US

Yankees, Red Sox, Cowboys, Dodgers, Cubs, Lakers...

Just because you don't know anything about American sport don't be just as ignorant as you claim they are.

Sorry Jonty i think you're wrong about the T-Shirt stunt. I sympathise with Klopp and the Liverpool players themselves, caught up in this as much as everyone i suspect. But i do think a clear, united, message to the owners and world was needed.

And was that message clear and united when half the players did it and half the players didn't?

If anything it showed the world a completely un-united message.

posted on 20/4/21

No, because the players and manager of one of the clubs involved didn't take the chance, perhaps understandably. Strange how Klopp/Milner can express dislike verbally, but not with an image? I think the messages coming out from most quarters in football are united. Last night was just a small instance of many then an in the future is my guess.

Regarding the t-shirts in the away dressing room, it would have been impolite and possibly inflammatory if the club HADN'T given the chance for Liverpool players to show their concerns.

It was far from a cheap shot - it was making sure that Liverpool players had the opportunity to wear them if they wished to. If only the Leeds players had them, it would then have been a 'cheap shot'.

The shirts were in their dressing room. We didn't force them to wear them. It might have deflected some of the unwarranted fan fury from their team if they had.

Was originally sponsored by the World Newspaper and the name stuck.

Also the Americans call it football because the ball is a foot long.

Amazing how people in this country scoff at ignorant Americans and don't take the time to learn this stuff.

"In his book Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded: August 27, 1883, Simon Winchester mentions in passing that the World Series was named for the New York World newspaper, but this view is disputed."

posted on 20/4/21

"Josh Laventhal, the author of World Series, said early organizers used the term as a marketing tactic. "By emphasizing the global significance of the game, they would be able to draw more people to the ballparks."

Several baseball blogs claim that the New York World newspaper was a sponsor of the game. They're in error, according to Eric Enders, head of Triple E Productions, a baseball research and consulting service.

"The truth is that at the time when it was first called World Series the two teams were really the best teams in the world," he said. "So they could semi-legitimately call that the World Series." But he conceded that today, with numerous other countries playing professional baseball, it might no longer be a legitimate claim."

Would seem that the people in this country aren't too far from the truth with the comments regarding the World Series...

Actually Fred yes I did. I spent many years working with and around US military, joining them watching these sporting events - and enjoying them by and large. I learned about the origins of baseball and i was corrected about my assumption - that was all back in the 80's/90's. But what a lot of the guys/girls watching, and indeed the commentary before, during and after games, was about how these were "world" events/tournaments.

Just because the model for sport works in the US, doesn't mean it would apply here.

"Both soccer-style football and rugby-style football eventually found their way to America. What resulted was an American combination of the two games. It was until much later (1906) that forward passing was allowed. So because the American game was really just another form of the European football games, it too became known as football."

I think a little research is needed before posting assumptions.

Klopp how are any of those teams performing in global competitions, and by the way I have American relatives and spent a good deal of time there.

Oh, and an American football isn’t a foot long, so probably best to button it.

Crikey the more I look at this, the more it stinks, Glazer is to run the ESL. What next, these clubs become franchises which relocate wherever the most money is?

Well, it's a shame that my long post has not stimulated debate on its central point: what must the players and coaches do now? Klopp and Bielsa, Milner and Bamford all stepped up - will others follow?

The clubs won't be able to stop this. Neither will the government - Johnson and Dowden are total incompetents in any case. You're having a larf if you think UEFA or FIFA will save European football as we've know it.

Only the players and coaches can stop this by refusing to participate and squashing it from the outset. We need ALL those high profile rich players of the six clubs concerned to put their jobs on the line.

Every man has his price, it is said, but not Marcelo Bielsa. His words last night were spot on, as one might expect. Same with James Milner.

Ha, yes, maybe...but I wasn't taking a pop Jonty. Of course you can say what you like, but I disagree that Bielsa would have allowed anyone to take any cheap shots!
