straight knockout. no seeding. no country protection. would never happen though as uefa wont want their favourites going out early.

I love the CL as it is tbh. Wouldn't make any changes.

Just one giant game with all teams involved in the one pitch.
Last man standing lifts the trophy

I liked it when the CL had a 2nd phase. Because there were only pretty much the 16 best teams, the games seemed more competitive than the 1st group phase usually is.

So I'd have straight knockout up until the last 16, then group phase, and then knockout from QFs onwards.

Pretty happy with the CL, think the only change I'd make is the 3rd placed teams going into the Europa, and even then I understand why it happens and am not that fussed

Absolutely

I like the seeding system. Makes for much better games QF onwards.

Yes, I don't think it's too bad, to be honest. There are probably questions around qualification, which countries get what number of teams etc, but the actual competition seems fine.

A straight knockout would be exciting but I get the need for groups. Every team that qualifies is guaranteed six games. That's great for "smaller" clubs who are far from certain to qualify every year, and the seeding system means they're likely to get at least one double-header against a stellar name. And more cynically, if one of the bigger teams does go out in the groups, at least they've had six games to pull in the viewers. I remember when there were two group phases, which was definitely overkill.

Last season's knockouts were great but, again, I see the attraction with two legs and the away goal.

I think it's OK. It's just that the Europa League is even better

There probably isn't a way of doing this which satisfies everyone. At the moment I think they allocate leagues a number of places based on the coefficient of their teams (I.e. how well they've done in Europe over a number of years). Seems fair enough on the face of it.

I like the CL as it is. Maybe a one leg knockout rather than two legs would be better?

That’s what I meant - you’ll get some people saying the “big” countries get too many teams, then I saw someone yesterday arguing that Turkey, Russia and Scotland shouldn’t have any teams. So you can’t please everyone.

There’s also the scope for confusing problems like 2005, when the winners didn’t technically qualify

Would prefer it just straight out champions which isn’t happening so..

Pretty much as it is but all league champions qualify for the group. No co-officient bias and no dropping down to the Europa

posted on 21/4/21

I wouldn’t want just champions. Some leagues are much weaker than others and would likely soon be knocked out. Not many games too.

They were not fooling anyone with their original intent and they are not fooling anyone with their U-Turn.

It was never about football and it never will be with people of the Glazers ilk.

I get that, but I'm not sure I would prefer it. The champions were the best team in their country the year they won the league, but they are not always so the year after. From a United perspective, the treble would have been impossible in 1999 as we didn't enter as champions. But by the time we beat Bayern in the final, we'd won not only the league but the FA Cup as well - so would the tournament really have been better for not having that side in it?

In short, having a few teams from the leading nations means you're more likely to get the best team of that season. It does make the name a bit meaningless though. Just call it the European Cup and have done with it.

Although you could argue effectively means one bad game and a top team are out, in a top European competition you probably should have some sort of room to show your consistency.

Maybe I’d keep it as it is but make knockouts one leg instead of two at a neutral venue

All top 5 European Leagues from England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France form into one super federation, you also want to include other countries clubs so it's the best 100 teams that are available around the continent. It takes the best 100 clubs from their respective divisions and places them into 5 leagues of 20. There could be ways to have knock out games or mini tournaments to grade the leagues and access to the leagues.

The remaining clubs from each respective nation reforms all of their professional Leagues in line with the 100. Relegation and promotions will be 5 teams each season, half the league effectively which keep things fresh a fluid, which is one thing that would potentially interest fans of the future and this new digital and virtual world we will soon live in.

You could have some kind of playoffs between the 5 relegated from the lowest super league and then from the 5 national Leagues and other clubs from around Europe from the leagues that continue outside of this breakaway 5 divisions.

Huge amounts of the revenues generated would need to be ringfenced to protect the rest of European football and maintain there is a route to success.

You would have inter divisional cup competitions from the 5 and from the the rest of Europe having their own, but also one mega knockout competition that all clubs are involved in.

You could even have some kind of nation specific cup competitions such as the FA Cup remaining, though there would need to be reforms and whilst teams in the premier league enter at round 3 now, you could have them entering at an even later stage depending upon where they fall in the 5 super divisions.

I’d have changed is the coefficients. It should be over three years rather than five.

Gazza 2 for the Atari was well ahead of its time in this respect. Though United were in the third division 😓

No seeding, names out of a hat, straight knockout out over 2 legs.

Change the coefficients and don’t link the prize money on offer to it either.
