Nuno's future?

Looking forward to next season already.

I think Nuno is well aware of the problems within the squad . He has tried to change to a more attacking formation but has realised that he just doesn't have the players to do it successfully.
Looking at Nuno's achievements over the last 4 seasons it is obvious that he is an outstanding manager and a couple of poor results don't change that. He is overly cautious and rather stubborn with his team selections but he still has my support for now.
As you say, let's see what the summer window and a full pre-season brings. I predict that Nuno will still be in charge next season, he will move to a 4 at the back formation and with crowds returning to the stadiums we will see better performances and better results.

If we lose Nuno now the chances are we see regression rather than progression imo.

Realistically, who do you see coming in to replace him?

I've always said I want Nuno to be given the chance to transition to what he has said he wants to over this summer, however my confidence that he is going to be able to do it is very low now.

That is what Fosun have to decide. Forget all the sentimentality and make a balanced judgement on whether they think he will be able to turn this around. If so, he needs to be backed in the transfer window. If not, and that will mean withholding funds then he needs to go.

I also think Fosun should be looking at who else is out there at this point. If there is someone out there with a better record than Nuno who buys into the club vision, it is better to give them a summer if the confidence in Nuno has gone.

I don't think he will be sacked in the summer but I wouldn't be that surprised if he walked. If he stays I really don't expect Fosun to give him a huge amount of time next season of we are still fishing up the same negative insipid style of football.

Also I am not sure how much involvement he has in transfers overall other than a 'we can bring in this guy, any objections'. Which would be something in his favour at least. That said it is apparently his desire to have a small squad though of course he has said we need more than what we have but then any fool can see that.

I think the bigger factor this summer will be how much Fosun put into the kitty, last season we appeared busy but actually nearly broke even so we surely have enough money to spend over this time around if we really still want to make progress.

Rightly or wrongly, I don't really know, but if he gets off to a poor start then I think he will be gone before Xmas.

I wouldn't rush in, but I'm on the fence.

I think transfer wise we will make Ait-Nouri's loan permanent but I would be surprised if either Willian or Vitinha get to stay. I think there is still some money to come from Liverpool for Jota and there is sure to be money coming in from sales of players too. It's quite likely we will cash in on Rafa Mir, Leonardo Campana, Patrick Cutrone, Ruben Vinagre and Bruno Jordao.
Morgan Gibbs-White will go out on loan again or be sold and the same applies to Dion Sanderson and maybe one or two more U23's like Chem Cambell, Theo Corbeanu and Lewis Richards who are too good for the U23's but unlikely to ever make the first team squad.

Just for the record, I fully expect Ait Nouri and Vitinha to be signed permanently.

posted on 26/4/21

Do we have no one who may break into the first team squad who is in the under 23 or on loan? Must be something going wrong , had hoped Sanderson may be in frame after Sunderland loan

Nuno only trusts about 13 of our players. Those guys are guaranteed to play 99% of the time. The others are fortunate to get 15 minutes from the bench.

Until that changes, I can't see any u23 players breaking through and signing youth players is a waste of time.

I’ve no idea how he can continue to trust these 13 players after yesterday’s showing?

24 hours later and I still can’t believe how bad we were. That’s as poor a home performance I’ve seen from us for a very long time.

We had better see a marked improvement on Monday

I'm struggling to remember a worse performance to be honest.

Joe Edwards didn't give any of the starting outfield players a rating higher than 3 in the E&S player ratings. I don't think anyone can argue against that either.

I think both Adama and Ait-Nouri tried their best but they were both swimming against the tide. As for the rest of them, yup 3 would be about right.

That's why they got 3s.

Saiss, Coady, Boly, Dendoncker and Podence all scored 2s.

I think Willian Jose can consider himself lucky to have scored a 3.

Yes they got 3s from Joe Edwards who is entitled to his opinion but knows no more about football than you or I.
I would give Patricio a 6, Ait-Nouri a 5, Adama a 4, Saiss, Coady and Boly a 2 and the rest a 3.

Yes Nuno too loyal to some players he is not being helped by some terrible performances and surprising it is happening under Coady’s watch as he is such a leader difficult to see Nuno axing Coady as he regards him as an integral part of Wolves which he has been , I find it difficult to see how we are going to improve at the moment

How has that hoever kid got on in your reserves/u21s?

Looked a real prospect at Liverpool especially for his age.

He doesn't play for the u21s or the u23s. He sits on the bench watching the first team play boring, predictable crap knowing that he couldn't possibly do any worse if he was given a chance and wishing he was still on Merseyside.

posted on 26/4/21

Yeah Gem has pretty much summed it up regarding Hoever. He must be wondering why he bothered. And as for paying for the u21s, don't be daft, much better to have them just sit and watch all the time.

posted on 26/4/21

It does really bug me that none of the young lads play any u23s football. The likes of Silva, Vitinha, Hoever etc would all have benefitted from playing some games rather than just sitting on the bench, even if just to build confidence.

I'm not sure if Otasowie has even played u23s since making his debut.

Today probably isn't the best day for a wolves fan to be reflecting on Nuno's future with any degree of clarity of thought. A performance as poor as that against an, at the very, best bang average side like Burnley was not something we ever want to see again.

I think you see in Nuno's body language that he's trying to do all the right stuff but the passion and enthusiasm are lacking. He's going through the motions and it's reflected in his teams performances. We saw it to a degree last season too, beating City home and away, losing to Huddersfield home and away. I think the lack of fans has just amplified the negatives in our attitude. Not enough points taken off the bottom 6 and fewer shocks against the top 6.

Is not only that though, it's plain and clear that the squad is not strong enough, players who need resting can't be and that good luck we were riding on with injuries ran out. It remains to be seen how valuable last summer's window will be to us in time but there's no doubt that Nuno has been asked to work with a weaker squad in this campaign than in his previous two. It's no doubt part of a longer term strategy and we may look back in a year and reflect that 12th wasn't such a bad dropping off point on the way to better things with normal life no so far off hopefully.

We're a long way off getting back to where we were but if we strengthen well this summer and players like Silva, Ait Nouri and Hoever continue to develop, a really solid foundation could be built. My fear is that we've too many others that have stagnated and aren't now able to put the performances in week after week at this level to get us back up challenging for Europe. What I'd like to see is the likes of Boly, Saiss, Coady, Moutinho, Dendoncker, Traore and Podence, being the able deputies to better, stronger players. It's a huge ask to find two replacements for all those but for me these lot just haven't been delivering consistently enough. Add Jose to that list too but can't see him being around much longer anyway. Maybe the backing of a full house at Molineux will give the coaching staff and players back their mojo, but I still reckon we need greater depth.

I think Otasowie played today against Norwich, they won 3-0.

Didn't mean to say two replacements for those players listed by the way, we're not Man City 😀
