PL golden age of strikers

Hopefully City will sign Haaland in the Summer and United hang on to Cavani.

The 90s were pretty good too with Cantona, Bergkamp, Shearer, Cole, Fowler, Sheringham, Owen, Ferdinand, Wright etc

We’re currently in a golden generation of goalscoring wide forwards. Salah, Mane, Son, Sterling, Sane all playing in a similar generation, that wasn’t there in the 2000s. Even then the likes of Kane, Aguero and Vardy probably hold a torch to the players you mentioned. Shearer was surely of a completely different gen to the others you mentioned at his peak.

We’ve seen one recently. Vardy, Kane, Auba, Aguero and Salah all playing at the same time, all in their peak - unlike the list in the op, where Henry, RVN and Shearer weren’t even playing in the prem when the likes of Rooney, Drogba and Ronaldo really started banging them in.

Yorke, Collymore, Yeboah

Not all of those were at their peak at the same time though. Drogba, Rooney and Ronaldo were not great goalscorers when Ruud, Shearer and Henry were in their pomp in the PL.

TBF the OP hasn’t said they were all at their peak at the same time, just that there were lots of great forwards around at at that period.

Not a Leicester fan, just an admirer, but without Vardy where would they be now? Obviously Iheanacho is quality. Good management I think. And Walkers crisps are still the best.

Overall quality of strikers was probably best in the 90's, although the best strikers were in the 00's. Best wingers are now, these guys are just as lethal in front of goals as some of the best strikers the league has seen.

Slightly off topic, but generally the whole 00's, but especially 06-09 followed by 17-20 was the strongest PL had been in terms of quality of teams and how good they were in European comps.

Yeah, mid 90s was better. For English strikers in particular. Ferdinand and Wright barely got 50 caps between them and regularly scored 25 plus goals a season over x amount of years... and this was during a time when the national team played 2 up top.

True. QPR were actually a consistent top half finisher with Ferdinand banging them in. The year he left, Newcastle became title contenders and QPR immediately went down. His scoring record from 92-97 was fantastic

Couldn't be more wrong.

Leicester are set up like proper football team. They have no need for 'stars'.

With players ideally suited for most of football's dynamism, the right responsibility in terms of shape and most of all the intelligence to work as a team.

In an era fixated on 'ego' Leicester have been an exemplary exercise in constructing a football 'team'.

Only RvN, drogba and shearer were truly attributable as the "striker" identified in the post title.

Two of the others were wingers and the other one was an attacking midfielder.

The post is subsequently based on a clearly false (and therefore pointless) postulation.

Wasn't really an insult - don't know why you're getting so pīssy. If you do need it breaking down though - it isn't really a 'golden age of strikers' if you're talking about players of different generations.

If, for arguments sake, Greenwood, Rashford and Jota go on to become 30 goal a season players, someone in 10 years might look back and say 'Wow, at one point we had Kane, Aguero, Salah, Greenwood, Rashford and Jota all playing at the same time!' Yeah it's true, but doesn't really tell the whole story.

Happy to help
