Gotta have Jayasuriya in the team. He changed one day cricket with his batting as an opener. Did his job with the ball too.
De Villiers to me is a myth. Did well in series but in tournaments he was a bottle job. My team:
1) Tendulkar
2) Jayasuriya
3) Ponting
4) Kohli
5) Sangakkara
6) Dhoni
7) Imran
8) Wasim
9) Garner
10) McGrath
11) Murali

Solid team. Can’t really argue with McGrath tbf but I’ve just never rated him as high as some others, given that he bowled low-80s. Accomplishment wise he should be in.
Shocked you’ve left Gilchrist out though, he was even more destructive than Jayasuriya and also helped change the game like Jayasuriya did. Plus his 149 in the 07 Final is the best innings I’ve seen in a big ODI game.
AB did falter in tournaments a lot but I think they would have won in 2015 if Steyn and the other bowlers didn’t choke against NZ. Any bowling attack should be able to defend 298 in 43 overs and they let AB down imo. They would have beat Aus in the Final imo if they won that game.

Maybe harsh on Gilchrist but for me he was more of a innovator in test cricket when he would take the game away from you coming in at 6.
With Jayasuriya in those days when 250 was a good score he could literally win the game for you in 10 overs.
Tendulkar
Jayasuriya
Ponting
Viv Richards
De Villiers
Dhoni (C)
Imran
Wasim
Garner
Muralitharan
McGrath
Roy
Bairstow
Root
Morgan
Stokes
Buttler
Woakes
Plunkett
Rashid
Archer

1) Saeed Anwer
2) Gilchrist
3) Brian Lara
4) Viv Richards
5) Micheal Bevan (averaged close to 50 in odi cricket in 90's)
6) Gary Sobers
7) Imran Khan
8) Wasim Akram
9) Warne
10) Starc
11) Joel Garner or Mcgrath

Well done, and pretty typically, there is not a single mention of any other englishman in any other post.
I applaud you and totally agree with your line up which would wipe the floor with all these other teams.
Bairstow alone would probably manage that too.
England were never that good in ODI cricket except for the last 4-5 years when dead batting wickets have been prepared and its Odi cricket is played in T-20 style.

So we adapted?

Credit to England for their dramatic rise in Odi cricket in the last 4-5 years but primary reason for omission of English playerts in Best ever ODI XI of most people is because they not been that good.

Kevin Pietersen and Ben Stokes are two English potentials for all world XI.Pietersen cannot be included because of longevity but if Stokes continues winning single handedly for England, then soon he will be picked as well
Stokes could well be in come the end of his career, but so far I feel that he’s not done quite enough in terms of pure stats.
Plus I still remember the Carlos Braithwaite incident in the 16 Final (that was T20, but still).
Gary Sobers, Ian Botham and Derek Randall as all-rounders.
Derek Underwood to bowl and keep the run-rate down with Lillee, Thompson, Hall and Griffiths to terrorise the batsmen.
Greenidge and Richards to chase any total.
Obviously can't include Boycott.
Post match - "We lost on slower run rate Geoff".
Boycs - "What the xxxx is run-rate?"
