Would be interested in you repeating the criticism of Lindelof if you wouldn’t mind. Especially given Parker has the same opinion.

Do we even have a renown defender on out coaching staff? That might be a consideration if we're going to win titles again. Right now we're smash and grab specialists who are Keystone Cops defence.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

That he frequently gets the wrong side of the attacker because he is to tight and easily gets turned.

That he allows himself to get physically bullied.

That he commits fouls when the attacker is going nowhere.

That when the pressure is on he tries to be clever instead of launching the ball into row Z.

That he doesn’t read where the danger is.

In the first half an hour he mentioned everything wrong with Lindelof and AWB

so he's concise and to the point as well then?

how much of that is actually down to coaching though?

committing fouls when the attacker is going nowhere isnt a coaching issue... its sheer stupidity

trying to be clever, again a coaching issue or basics... what you learn as a kid from an early age... if in doubt, hoof it out.

being physically bullied... again.. is that a coaching issue or is he physically weak.

i think it all just points to the fact he really isnt that good

Yeah I think I’d agree with that. His and AWB’s positioning are truly terrible.

Indeed we have an issue with defenders when it comes to the basics. We have an issue with defending as a unit. We have an issue with coordinating the press properly.

All of these issues should have been sorted already, they do not require years.

I suppose you think he needs a new defensive coach? Alas, I doubt it will happen. He probably thinks he will be undermining his current coaches.

Much as I'd defer to Paul Parker's knowledge of defending, I thought Villa didn't cause us many problems. For the goal there was a catalogue of errors: Fred's pass to McTominay was overhit, McT probably could have done better in controlling it, and then Lindelof was caught a bit flat-footed and didn't get proper contact on the ball when he had a chance to clear it. That said, it took a world class strike from that position to score.

Anyway, I don't think you'll find anyone (sensible) disagreeing with the wider point that we need to improve our defence ahead of next season. There's definitely scope for a personnel upgrade.

Always liked Paul Parker as a player. The stand-out memory him finishing off the team goal vs Spurs.

.........................

They just don't communicate with each other.

I think it was Rosso that said this (apologies if wrong) that the fact AWB and Shaw are getting drawn inside is by statistical design, meaning it is coached.

If so it really doesn't help.

the first parker memory that springs to mind for me is him closing down brehme and turning his back on the ball before it loops over shilton.... hardly the top defending he is wanting to see.

ex pros are too opinionated with Robbie Savage being the worse.
he sits there criticizing someones finishing or passing when he was absolute dogshiiite at both

De Gea, Williams, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Telles, Matic, Van de Beek, Mata, Amad, Greenwood, Elanga.

That was a freak deflection and if you're going to blame anyone for Germany's goal, blame Shilton. I just re-watched the video. He wasn't even far out. The ball loops up in the air for ages and Shilton seems very slow to realise where it's going. He takes a couple of steps backwards with no sense of urgency and casually raises his arm. It's abysmal goalkeeping!

I'd have saved that shot. He gets his feet movement all wrong and arches back for no reason (Seaman did this quite a bit too).

Maybe that would have featured more in the narrative of the WC semi-final if it hadn't been so early in the match. There were so many other sub-plots - the fight-back with Lineker's equaliser, Gazza's yellow card and tears, the drama of the penalty shoot-out - that somehow it wouldn't have been a satisfying narrative arc to put the disaster at the start of Act One of the drama. Unfortunate for Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle that their mistakes came at the dénouement, so they were the ones the tabloids decided to crucify the following day.

It reminded me of Seaman vs Ronaldinho in 2002, though Shilton's is much worse.

I think that was a World Cup too far for Shilton. Don't think he got anywhere near any of the pens either did he? Although, to be fair, the Germans do take a great penalty usually in the shoot outs.

oh for sure shilton was to blame too... but it still poor defending... running out to block a shot, crouching down and turning your back.. hardly great

I think Chris Woods was the alternative!

Shilton was well slow by 1990. Shame, he will be remembered for that lobbing over him and Maradona in 1986, which wasn't his fault.

well it was really.. yes the cant cheated by hand balling it, but there is absolutely no way he should be out jumping shilton to get to it first

I predicted our defence as Williams/Telles at fullback and Tuanzebe/Bailly at CB for tonight and it wouldn’t surprise me to see us lose by 3 goals.

But Shilton wasn't expecting him to use his hand. If so and he still got beaten to it then blame him.

Usually a waste of time seeing the youngsters when they’re thrown in amongst a bunch of random first teamers who themselves have no cohesion in their play. Always frustrates me, better giving players minutes in their favoured position in games with the first team as a sub etc.
