Which players to keep, and which not!

Here's a starter for you:

KEEP:
Patricio, Ait-Nouri, Jonny, Coady, Boly, Semedo, Kilman, Neves, Gibbs-White, Moutinho, Neto, Jimenez, Podence, Silva, Traore

LET GO:
Marcal, Vitinha, Jose

The others I could be persuaded either way.

Will be an interesting summer that is for sure. From what we have finished the season with I would...

Get rid......Jose(surprise), Traore(doesn't do it enough for me and we would get a decent fee which will be a big factor for the next guy to be successful), Cutrone(hopefully we get to sell him just to wrap that saga up and free up/bring in some cash)

Can go and wouldn't be too upset about it as we will need to generate cash and will add new additions/upgrades......Saiss(just think it is probably time though he could be a very useful utility player), Vitinha(more dependant on what our system will be but his leaving while still unproven would free up 15+m), Marcal(dependant a little on the Jonny timeline and if he can have an injury free summer, may be a useful keep it Jonny is missing for a long time), Moutinho(probably ready to go home and that's fine).

End of the day we have a small squad and need to add more than take away, I really don't think much of our problem has been on the players but more the tactics adopted. Would like to think we bring in around five quality additions that are not projects but actually game ready.

I think Ait Nouri is going to be an outstanding player and we should definitely take up his option. Not sure Vitinha has done enough, I suspect if he were signed he'd end up out on loan a la Jordao. José is a no brained, adios Willian.

We should cash in on Mir, strike now whilst his value is good, taking him back only to find he still can't score in England would leave us with another non scoring striker clogging up the squad.

On that subject, we've got to find a way of getting rid of Cutrone, can't be good for any party what's happened over the last 18 months.

If we've got to sell to buy, maybe letting Rui go might be the least harmful option. As for Traore, do you let such a unique talent go or do you allow a new coach the chance to get more output from him? Tricky one but Id give him another chance.

I guess we could all name manes as to who we want to keep and who should go, but at the end of the day none of our squad are out of contract. Saiss had a 12 month extension due to the fact that he started 20 games.

I'm sure Willian Jose will return to Real Sociadad, but I would take up the option to buy both Air-Nouri and Vitinha.

Jordao (inj), Ronan (inj), Cutrone, Vinagre, Campana and Mir are all due back after their loan spells. Bonatini and Burr (inj) are at Grasshoppers until June 2022.

I'm hoping that whoever we get, comes in soon, so that he can asses the players he has and decides who he'll try and offload. But that depends on whether any club wants them, of course. Tricky situation imo.

Most of all, whoever comes in should use the U23's to give players on the fringe game time as it was obvious to me that those that did come in weren't totally ready or match fit.

Keep: Patricio, Semedo, Jonny, Ait-Nouri, Boly, Coady, Neves, Vitinha, Dendoncker, MGW, Neto, Podence, Jimenez, Silva

Sell if we get a big offer: Traore

Let go: Saiss, Moutinho, Willian Jose, Marcal

New manager to make decision on Mir, Cutrone, Vinagre. Based on squad options, potential money made from transfers etc.

Makes you realise how small our squad actually is when you do this.

posted on 24/5/21

Had forgot about Vinagre, he could be a decent source of transfer funds too. I think Nuno's insistence on a small squad and a tight knit happy family approach to squad management will have to go out of the door with him. It left us far too vulnerable to injuries and drops in form which all players suffer at some time or other.

posted on 24/5/21

Not sure about MGW (not a prem player in my opinion), Podence ( injury prone) or Dendoncker (massive drop off in form this season).
Having said that, we can't let anyone go until we have replacements and built a bigger squad.

Starting from the basis of a small squad we certainly wouldn’t choose to lose players who have a part to play.

Players that don’t have a part to play in my opinion are Cutrone, Jose, Vinagre and all the players due back from loan with the possible exception of Mir, that’s one for the new manager to make a call on.

Marcal could go but after all his injuries we wouldn’t get much for him. Ruddy of course is going. And I think the time is right to move on without Moutinho.

Can’t understand the wish to let Traore go who has been outstanding recently despite almost fighting a lone battle as an attacking force. Liverpool would take him at the drop of a hat, he’s in the Spanish squad, yet not good enough for Wolves? A forward line including him Jimenez and Neto is dreamland for Wolves in my opinion. If we did want to raise some cash I’d be much happier to see Podence go.

posted on 24/5/21

Of the players we have on loan I think Vitinha is the best prospect and I would certainly like to keep him. And there’s lots of good things about Ait Nouri but as a left back in a back 4 he would need to improve his defending. Jose, no chance, which will be a disappointment to Sociedad who evidently were convinced wolves would want him

posted on 24/5/21

Traore is an enigma, on his day he is unplayable but he does not have enough good days. He spends too much time out of the game and he needs a free rein to do what he does best.
However at the moment I would definitely keep him and see what a new manager can do with him.

posted on 24/5/21

Traore is very much a flair player and a potential match winner. What I don’t think he will ever be is a player that plays consistently well for 90 minutes week in week out. But I think we need players like him against teams that sit deep against us and he has already shown he can terrify the best of teams like Man City, Liverpool and Man Utd

with Neto out till somewhere between October and Christmas, unless a mad offer came in I'd keep Adama.

Nouri I'd sign up, he's improved a lot as the season as gone on and with Jonny out long term unless we can get a player with prem experience we may as well keep Nouri.

Vitinha hasn't been given enough game time but he seems able to pass forwards so that's a start and I think he'd be one we'll regret in 3 years time if we don't sign him.

The talk is of strengthening the first team and the squad - the quickest way to do that really is by signing players for the first team, and those they replace are bench/rotate options. all of the loanees barring Rafa (I agree he's the call of the new boss) hould be sold and will bring in decent combined money to help bring in some new blood.

oh and MGW I think has shown enough the last few weeks to be retained in the first team squad next season.

Podence/Donk/Saiss I'd move on to re-balance books once we have got replacements in

Agree with all of that Tino. My only concern there would be Ait-Nouri who is going to cost £n million and I'm not convinced that he is any better than Vinagre. He's certainly not a better defender than Vinagre. If the new manager plays with a back 4 and with a fit Jonny and a fit Marcal, I can't see much of a future for Vinagre, Ait-Nouri or Hoever either.

I get that Gem

catch22 I guess... Marcal has in his first season managed 13 games, not sure his record for consecutive ones though and Jonny (I do love him) has 2 ACL's in a year, how well can he come back from that?

I think both Nouri and Vinagre would be better wingers though - maybe Nuno's "we have the solutions in our squad" wasn't wide of the mark, we just never got all the solutions fit

For me the players fall into 3 keep groups, yes, no & maybe
Yes:
Patricio
Sarkic
Boly
Coady
Semedo
Kilman
Jonny
Neves
Jimenez
Silva
Neto
Traore

No:
Saiss
Willian José
Dendoncker
Podence
All loanees except Matija Sarkic

Maybe:
Moutinho
Gibbs-White
Vitinha
Hoever
Marcal

I read that the surgeon who operated on Jonny said that he had notonly sorted the second ACL problem but also the root cause of the first one. I hope that is true because I do think Jonny is our best LB option and arguably our best defender.

If we could afford to carry a 30+ million bench player then I would keep Traore but he would still generate a good fee though nowhere near what it would have been a year ago and we will need to generate money if we want to bring in new blood.

Another catch 22 is Conor Coady. At the centre of a back 3 and as a skipper there is no-one in the league I would rather have. However if the the new manager goes and sticks with a back 4, the future for Coady would be bleak.

yea he wouldn't wanna stay as bench. however. as a DM so effectively doing the same job but 10 yards further forward

Since Neto got injured, Traore has been far and away our best attacking player.
The thought of playing Liverpool with Traore in a red shirt and Ait-Nouri trying to defend against him is the stuff of nightmares.

. But thankfully that would only be for twenty minutes as he would never be a starter for Liverpool

I had the same thought. In a 4.1.2.3 with Coady in front of the back 4 and behind the central 2.
In fact when you think about it a st up of

.................Patricio
Semedo. ANO. Boly. Jonny
................Coady
............ANO.Neves
..Traore. Jimenez. Neto

could work well. With a new big, powerful CB to partner Boly and an attacking playmaker (Grealish style) to partner Neves.

posted on 24/5/21

Would like to see Neves not so deep but suspect that is where most managers would have him, basically where you guys are putting Coady.

Whatever happens I hope the next guy doesn't want more than one deep midfielder.

posted on 24/5/21

two deep mids would only really work in a 4-2-3-1

Neves can deffo operate further forward,
