Think I would rather we took a chance rather than go with a safe option like Benitez. Aim for the stars.

Don't think Fosun will go for Benitez, though still wonder if Lage is the right move. As pointed out above on top of his lack of experience he's been out of work for 11 months.

Is it pronounced laj or la-ga

Hope I'm wrong, but I still say Mendes has too much control at Wolves. Fosun having a 20% interest in Gestifute doesn't help either.

Not sure what the negatives of Mendes involvement have been so far to be honest?

No doubt on the field we have benefitted massively for the most part and we also benefitted manager wise so far. The Lage appointment if it happens could be considered a risky one and Mendes will have been quite involved in it but can't call that a negative yet.

I don't mind Mendes' involvement at all, it's why we won the championship and we've hugely benefitted from it. I think the cost of that, which I broadly accept, is that it won't always work in our favour because we're just one of the pieces on his chess board.

But what makes me really uncomfortable is that it doesn't feel to me like we have anyone of sufficient weight within the club to help Shi assess whatever Mendes puts forward. When Mendes is really pushing Lage (I assume) a. Can Shi say no and if he does then do we lose favour with Mendes who we need desperately with our current setup and b. Who is in his other ear that comes within a million miles of Mendes influence and gravitas within the game? Former academy coach Scott sellars? Not reassuring.

We don't seem to have anyone really experienced in football and senior at the club at all, which might make life simpler for Jeff but can't be good for the club.

Don't Fosun own part of Mendes' agency Gestifute. I think they have more influence than people give them credit for.

Agree with the general point and I’ve always been uncomfortable that we offloaded Dalrymple and Thelwell and didn’t replace them. So there’s no real football man at board level to steer the ship and provide advice to Jeff who is a business man from China with no involvement in the game before he cane to wolves. I think Mendes has been good for the club but it is weird and unsettling that he seems to provide the advice in these matters. Jorge is a very successful agent but does that make him a football expert?

I agree with the point about Scott Sellars maybe not having the experience and gravitas to be a senior and independent advisor for Fosun, not happy about rumours of selling Neves to fund transfers

cathro? I think so... I read though that the backroom staff wanted to stay

the fitness coach was on the school run this morning

Seems odd that all the backroom staff wanted to stay. They usually follow the manager. Not sure what that says about the current situation. Have they bought into the project or were they also questioning Nuno?

I'm not saying that Mendes has had a negative effect on the club. My point is, Fosun have a 20% interest in his agency (Gestifute) and it seems that everything that happens at Wolves, goes through Mendes. I can't think of another club where an agent has so much influence.

Yeah fair point regarding who has Shi's ear. Hopefully that is something we address this summer

Don’t think it’s unusual for the back room staff to want to keep getting paid until either a new manager arrives or until the old manager gets a new job and invites them to join him

Interesting how the betting has moved the last 24 hours. Lage was priced up as a stone cold certainty yesterday and while he remains favourite it’s looking some way from being a done deal now

New name on the short list is Pedro Martens. He is Portuguese (shock) and has for the last three years been manager of Olympiakos in Greece so presumably knows Podence well. He has just won the Greek league for the second time in three years and set a record for the Greek team with the most wins in Europe

I'm reading that Jef is concerned at the lack of income from empty stadiums. Does this mean more loans rather than permanent moves into the club? We're being re-assured on the one hand that Neves is contracted until 2024 and will not be leaving, then on the other hand, if the right offer comes in, he'll go.

I think the new coach, whoever he is, is going to have a tough time next season and I wonder how much influence he'll have on his squad.

Wouldn't surprise me if the loanee's that are returning stay with the club, just to increase the squad, or is Mendes going to do some wheeling and dealing.

It obviously implies a negative effect on the club if you say that he has too much control?

Too much control is like having too many draws, you need to legislate against it at all costs.

Not to mention Olympiakos being the better team in both legs when we faced them. Saw him mentioned the other day somewhere.

I am in no doubt that Fosun have scaled back their plans for the club the last few years for whatever reason. As for selling players, no problem with that, you have to cash in when the price is right and you also have to generate funds.

I think they wrongly assumed that they could gatecrash the Big Six party with a few quid to splash around,

No chance of that happening as it’s a closed shop. VAR gave the Premier League another means to protect the big boys monopoly on the game.

posted on 26/5/21

Leicester and West Ham finished in the top 6 this season. I’d be happy for Wolves to replicate that come next May

posted on 26/5/21

Think if Nuno were braver we would have finished top six in 2019-20.

posted on 26/5/21

Yeah, the games against Burnley and Sheffield United that season cost us the top six finish. If we hadn't gone overly defensive in those games we'd have had another season in Europe.
