.................
You say this every time we have a similar discussion. This isn't the first time.
I'm sure we could find a 12 game period where we dropped enough points to make up the 12 points on City?
This season Everton had a better chance of top four than we did the title, though.
..................
I don't think either had a chance, certainly none better than the other. But then, that argument wasn't what was in question until Indian got pulled up for a ridiculous comment and then shifted the goal posts.
Bottom line is that Everton did not come close to top four.

When putting some sort of perspective on the fact that this is Man City's worst points tally when winning the league, yes I would say Everton would be more likely to overhaul 6 teams and 7 points rather than you overhauling 12 points, despite it only being 1 position.
........................
Evidence I just gave you points in the opposite direction.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not exactly.
City's lowest points tally when they've won the league and you still finished 12 points behind. So essentially, you've arguably got an even tougher task next season because you would be expecting City to get more points than what they did this year.
Everton have also had an unexpectedly woeful home record this season, losing to the likes of Fulham and Sheffield United for example, games you would ordinarily expect them to win.
Probably, but after City’s ridiculous run of form we were never really in a position to finish top. Everton were with the top four, but completely collapsed at the end of the season.
And the end result of their collapse had them not close to top four, yes?
Had they not have collapsed and finished, let’s say 5th, then there would be an argument that they were close to top four.

Well no, because they didn't actually finish that far away from the top four. If they finished 5th with more points than what they have now, there would not be an argument as to them being close to the top 4. I'll let you work out why.

Whilst only finishing 7 points behind. When fans review the season, what is (usually) the first thing you look at? The points you have dropped in games you have drawn/lost where perhaps you shouldn't have or would not have expected to.
Personally, I would rather finish 10th and 7 points behind the top 4 as opposed to 8th and 10 points behind, because you have a larger gap to catch up on in terms of points. Especially in Everton's situation where they are still building towards the top 4 and are not the finished article.
The point is, someone said Everton nearly finished fourth. They didn’t.
There’s not much point comparing it with United “nearly” winning the league, as I don’t think anybody would seriously suggest United nearly won the league.
Not in terms of position no, but when you're putting more perspective on where Everton are now compared to where they were under Allardyce for example, I think even the club believe they are closer to finishing in the top 4 now than what they were under Allardyce.

Eight.
Five other teams were less further behind. They were all closer than Everton. Put that perspective to it.

Maybe, but this is the comment that started it: "Granted he is past his best and I wouldn't prefer him to be United manager next but he almost got top 4 with Everton with Calvert Lewin and Richarlison in attack."
That's not to do with Allardyce or progress since then, just a simple claim that Everton nearly finished fourth. They finished tenth, didn't really look like getting into the top four at the business end of the season and finished below Arsenal and Leeds. Leicester nearly finished fourth and you could even argue West Ham did.

Wasn’t the comment that they were closer to top four than we were to winning the title? That’s the one I saw. And it’s true. This season there was such a small gap between most of the clubs in the top half.

Yes, he came back and said that ("Only 6 pts away from top 4. In contrast we finished 12 pts away from City" ) but only after the initial one I'd put above.
Of course it's true that Everton were nearer in points to fourth than we were to first; that's just a mathematical fact. But it's also kind of irrelevant in terms of Red Indian's original point about Everton "nearly" finished fourth - when it was pointed out that they finished tenth, he doubled down by saying that that was closer than United to the title, even though nobody has suggested that we "nearly" won the title.

Yes so they are all in the same boat thinking that they were "close" to finishing in the top 4 as well because they are not that many points behind. That's what teams use as their indicator these days when attempting to improve, can we collect more points to ultimately finish higher up the table.
Regardless, looking at it from Everton's perspective, it's not to do with who else did what, from their point of view, they will not see themselves as being too far away from the top 4, knowing that a few results needed to change in order to do that. As opposed to Allardyce's Everton who needed something like 6 more wins, which is a far more unlikely task in the grand scheme of things.

And with the exception of Leicester and West Ham none of them were in reality close to top four.
And I doubt Spurs, Leeds or Arsenal would claim to be close to top four either. Spurs sacked their manager because they knew they were not close.
With ten games to go Everton never got higher than 8th.
