as midfielders we have 2 who play the holding role or 4; Rice & Phillips, 2 who are deeper midfielders or 6 but not holding in Henderson & Bellingham. JWP would be third choice as a 6.
Mount can play as a central midfielder as an 8. Bellingham could also be used as an 8. Phillips & Rice can both be used as a 6.
For 2 positions we have plenty of options.
At CB we only really have Maguire, Stones, Mings, Coady who can play in a 2. I think there are bigger doubts about the ability of Coady & Mings, obviously the injury to Maguire adds to this. Although same can be said about Henderson.
I think JWP is unlucky to miss out. He was excellent yesterday. But in the end we needed a CB more than we needed a 6.
Wouldn't be surprised to see White force his way into the starting lineup if Maguire doesn't get fit soon.

you are making a case for a 5th CB when Southgate is replacing a RB/RWB. If CB was such a concern then why take 4 RBs in the first instance.
To me it highlights that 1. Southgate didnt want to make an unpopular decision at RB and 2. Is very defensively minded.

And you are making the case for a 6th centre mid when replacing a RB. You could easily say 'If Centre Mid is such a concern then why only take 5 in the first place?' So I'm not sure what your argument is?
But what you say in point 2 is 100% correct
He definitely bottled making an unpopular choice and in a way I think he's quite lucky that Trent got injured. And he's frustratingly close to the top of the cautious scale of management.
He was brilliant for Leeds last season, I don't think pundits, fans realise how good he is, if they did he would be starting ahead of crocked Maguire.

There are a few oddballs like that on Twitter but most of it is just joking around basically. #FreeBenWhite wasn't a deadly serious campaign, for example.

Think it is a by-product of social media, which facilitates people remaining attached to fan favourites. No doubt that we would have seen the same with past players, if Twitter were around when they left us.
Is it a crime to support and follow England players now?
Because that's what Ben White is. And why a ton of Leeds fans are following him. He's a great lad and an
exceptional talent, who also helped us get to the Prem..
