why we havent gone for boubakary soumaré for around 20 million baffles me

Im a fan of Ruben Neves and there has been a lot of reports that Wolves are prepared to sell for roughly £35m. Not sure if he would improve us significantly though.

Our squad building still isn’t very good. I suspect this will be the third summer we fail to really address the problems in midfield.

never been an Ole out fan, but if he thinks harry winks would benefit us in any way shape of form, and for 25 million quid that would soon be changing

And midfield and right wing were always the biggest issues. Yet here we are.

were they?

depends on what you are looking at.

CB has always been a big issue
we needed a RB after Valencia
we needed a proper CF
we needed a midfielder who could create and score goals

to be fair we have spent money on the CM... just turned out to be g@sh

That's not a serious rumour!

Yes they were. We haven’t signed one central midfielder since Ole’s been at the club. The squad building hasn’t been good enough, despite spending hundreds of millions. We can blame Woodward if you like, though.

It's hard to understand the DVDB signing in this context. He might have been brought in as the passing player in the double pivot, but the fact that he has tended to come on to give Bruno or Pogba a breather suggests that Solskjaer isn't at all convinced that's his role. Did we prioritise squad depth in attacking midfield over upgrading the central midfield?

Another name to throw in the mix: Weston McKennie

Similar to Fred, he's a high energy workhorse who plays any midfield spot for Juventus and CDM/CM for US National Team. Might be premature because I saw the US/Mexico game last night (a wildly entertaining game if you can find the extended highlights for it). Juventus is currently in a financial pickle, so they will be letting him go if the right offer comes along. I'd think £20m is a good offer.

We can sign the best midfielder in the world, he'll start of great but few months down the line he'll just become another headless chicken with the lack of coaching at this club. Even with Bruno, as good as he was last season and beginning of this, past few months kept noticing him trying flicks and all this stuff that hardly ever pull of and constant loss of possession. Should be told to sometimes keep it simple rather than hollywood passes and flicks all the time. Rashford too.

Evidently that’s the case.

This why I’ve had a problem with our squad building. Especially given the way Ole sets up the midfield.

I think you've already named the midfielder that would provide that net contribution in Tielemens, RR. Certainly as far as 'ready-made' goes.

I also really like the look of Bellingham - he seems that rare breed of genuine all rounder in midfield; good energy, aggressive in his pressing and competing, but also quite silky on the ball and looks to provide forward impetus both with his passing and his running. Outrageous that he's still only 17. He even looks good for England!

From within our own ranks, Garner is of the right sort of stuff, but may benefit from one more full season of senior football in the Championship or PL to really judge where he is at.

From the rumours I've read I don't think we'd be spending a huge net amount if we sold Pogba and bought both Neves and Bissouma. I don't think either are as good as Pogba in some senses but they would compliment what we're trying to do a bit better. They'd keep the ball better I think in the 2.

It’s a great chance for us to get big wages off the books in Mata and Matic, then replace them with a quality DM.

Would love Ndidi.

Not sure either are good enough individually to be our 'two'. Bissouma would be an upgrade on Fred and maybe McTominay, so it would be alittle bit like-for-like. Neves provides a little of what we lack in terms of someone in the middle of the park that can switch the play with a long pass, but not sure he's so good at other things to justify signing him.

We could really do with finding a Carrick/Scholes/Modric/ Xabi Alonso sort of player. I know that's a big ask and that such players are hard to come by, but the best teams have a player (or two!) in the middle of the park of that calibre. We haven't for quite some time now.

I have a feeling that Bellingham could be the real 'generational talent' among the impressive group of English youngsters emerging at the moment. The way he played against City in the CL in particular showed outrageous maturity and assurance in addition to quality. I suspect we'll rue the day we let him slip from Birmingham City to BVB.

I'll be honest and admit they were somewhat lazy choices but I do think they'd improve us! Hopefully our scouts are better than I am but it is an area we need to be much better in. Fred and McT have their uses but I don't think they'll get us to where we want to be.

Bellingham's stock has risen significantly since moving to Germany. I wonder if we'll have money left in the pot to buy him soon.

The problem is that we need two central midfielders. We should be looking to try and bring in Bissouma and Tielemans in the next 12 months.

Although I agree with the point you're making.
