I can't see Raphinha being cheap: there would be competition for his signature and we'd have to offer significantly more than that competition for Leeds to think the backlash from fans was worth it. That might be worth it if we think he's a player with the same or a higher ceiling. However, if we think Sancho is the better player, will we look back on a decision to invest e.g. £60m in Raphinha rather than £80m in Sancho (and one of our direct rivals ends up enjoying that competitive edge over us for 5-10 years) as a good one?

Raphinha is quoted at that price?? Forget that then. I'm sticking with the French talents I previously listed (Moussa Diaby and Jonathan Ikone). Rather gamble on someone with a higher ceiling that Raphinha if that's the case.

#mufc have had a £60m bid for Jadon Sancho rejected by Borussia Dortmund. The German club are believed to be demanding a fee of £77.5m, plus success-based bonuses #mulive [times]

They're gonna burn their entire cash reserves on one player. Come on guys. Seriously?

Simon Stone @sistoney67

€78m bid from @ManUtd for Jadon Sancho turned down by BVB. They want €90 + 5 and a shorter repayment period than the five years suggested. That is not a massive gap but needs closing. Pre-existing gentleman’s agreement in place with player if fee met by right timescale.

So 2 supposedly reliable sources with 2 differing figures.

Somebody is fibbing to get on the bandwagon..

That number was pure speculation on my part. I'd be surprised to see Leeds accepting anything but a very high price if they were selling their best creative player to their bitterest rival on the back of a successful first season back in the top flight (and considering what happened to Sheffield United in their second season). But I might be totally wrong.

The broader point is about the relative value of 'very good' and 'top quality' to teams that aspire to the top honours. Is there a scenario where Sancho is 10% better than Raphinha but that makes him 50% more valuable because the margins between success and failure at the top of the sport are so fine (and the marketing value of the top tier winger is so much higher)?

I also think it's harder for a top club to successfully bring in emerging talents as alternatives. We aren't in a position where it's sustainable to wait for them to reach the required standard while regularly playing in a way that e.g. Leicester can. Our business model requires CL football, whereas for Leicester it's a bonus.

Sorry 3 different amounts reported by supposedly reliable source if you count Bild.

Raphinha Is also South American which is obviously an issue. If we’d just bought Sancho when he was still at City we wouldn’t have the problems that come from getting a player from the bundesliga.

I can't believe people are taking about this with such conviction given its all based on speculation and rumour.

All we know is we made enquiries 2 seasons ago, and last season Dortmund told the world they wouldnt sell the player to anyone (wasn't specific to United) beyond a set deadline.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We also know that they have confirmed that they had a gentlemen's agreement with Sancho. He is up for grabs this summer. Whether we reach and agreement with them remains to be seen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Have they confirmed this?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes.

feel free to leave the article then, rather than sullying yourself by joining in such base speculation
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not joining on the speculation. I'm questioning peoples willingness to accept it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then asked how you can determine whether the OP is telling the truth. Which I don't get. The OP has just relayed a story in the press. You either believe the story or you don't. Either way, the OP doesn't need to be believed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was questioning if a newspaper report was confirmation of an official bid.

After that someone tried to be smart so I played then at their own game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really. Your question was irrelevant.

Still upset all these years on about being wrong about Fatboy Anderson I see.

He's not even worth 69m EUROs let alone anywhere near 100m

50m tops, if 69m included bonuses Dortmund should be taking that.

Any higher and we should be walking away and focusing on other targets. But the mugs that we are we'll end up paying the 90m plus bonuses!
