VAR & Referees at the Euros

I thought the England Czech game was a great example of the standard of reffing I like to see - wave away the niggly 'fouls' and only use VAR on major decisions like the Henderson OG.

Even the offside calls seem to be better in the tournament, maybe it's just intense training?

I agree that the referring has been good so far.

You really get the impression that the referee is in charge. VAR appears to only intervene occasionally as opposed to in the PL where the refs seem to rely on VAR for almost every decision.

theres been two terrible decisions ive seen all tournament and theyre a weekly affair in the premier league. other than that var and refereeing has been refreshingly great

So what about the referee in the England/Cech game who kept on putting his fat aaarrrse in the way then ! the German commentator I listened to ,was apoplectic, and wanted him replaced at H/T !

The standard of refeering and implementation of var so far has been so much better than what we see in the prem.

The ref last night was a bit of a clown, seemed the mike dean type, desperate to give a controversial decision but generally they have allowed the games to flow and got the big calls right.

The quick offside calls show there is no need for this nonsensical drawing of lines in the studio. The premier league need to implement var like this.

The reason we like it is because the games flow more but the fall out of that is that the wrong decisions are being made as a consequence. The only one I'm thinking of last night is the Mbappe one. The Lloris punch was reckless and the handball is just a poor law applied correctly. I get how the on field ref could get charmed by the kind of player Mbappe is and get conned for the pen but there's no excuse for VAR on that one. It's never a pen in a million years.

So what's more important - accuracy or the flow of the game? As far as I'm concerned you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. If they make it more accurate, fans complain of it killing the game. If incorrect decisions are made just to keep the game flowing more, we call it unfair.

This is all to do with money. Wrong decisions cost clubs fortunes these days so there's a clamour for tech to help us. It's just that it's in its infancy. Eventually we'll have automatic offsides and the subjective decisions faster and more refined. It's still very early to be judging it completely.

To throw it out as some of my mates have suggested is just absurd. We're too desperate for the right calls to be made for that to happen.

There was an awful decision last night when Penandes raked his boot down the back of a France players calf in the last minute, which was possibly inside the box also.

It was a clear foul, but was not given by the on field referee and ignored by VAR.

This is just one instance where justice was not done. We will never eliminate benefit of doubt from decision making, it is all a matter of opinion.

They seem to have offside sorted but they won’t overrule the ref when it comes to penalties

I think the overseas referees and VAR officials have been excellent throughout the tournament really. That's not to say the English one's haven't either, but I hope this is an experience the English referee's and VAR officials can take back with them and then consult with the relevant people and say "we need x,y and z to change and that will improve the standard in the country."

Get rid of VAR. Leave it to the ref. A good ref does not need VAR.

Agreed. Many of us felt that way. I felt for Hungary, but it would not have altered their status even if France had won at that point. However this incident rather negates the trust we all have for an impartial VAR. Rolando and Benzema walking of the pitch arm in arm full of smiles further encouraged the idea of some pre match collusion.
This last ignored foul was more deserving of a penalty than the three allowed previously. so I want know why it was ignored by the ref and passed over by supreme justice VAR... swept under the carpet of elitist convenience.

Shambles last night - think they realised the Lloris one was dubious so they gave the Mbappe one which was worse so in an attempt to further even it up they turned down the calf raking.

Another thing why was nobody booked when the Portuguese were hounding him during the Mbappe decision - yes, looking at you, Pepe? In fact, I'd just book Pepe every game before he takes the field.

I digress, another thing - during that episode why was Ronaldo nowhere to be seen? Did he realise it makes no difference? Did he just leave it to the others? If he felt so strongly why was he not pulling the others away? Is he only captain for the glory bits?

The Spanish ref, Lahoz from last nights game is retiring after the Euros. Mustn’t be a fan of VAR himself. I’d assume, it’s perhaps sped up his retirement plans.

Yes Billy, I also noticed this. Imo it was more of a legitimate penalty kick than the other three that were given.

I like Lahoz, he doesn't buy any of the players' moaning and groaning on the field at all and doesn't play the "cheap foul" rule either like we do in England.
