It was, the golden generation was Beckham, Scholes, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand, Owen, Terry, Cole (both)

That team should have achieved far more than it did and is better all round than both the 96 side and today’s team. However, the 96 side was very experienced and managed to ride a wave of euphoria. The current side plays as a team, and clearly get on well as a squad.

The only thing golden about the ‘96 team, was the amount of beer they downed in China.

Player for player, I think the other two teams and squads you have mentioned are superior to this one.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is that even up for debate? You had world class midfielders keepers and centre backs, we’ve got none of those today. Our strength mostly relies in attack.

in that era there was alot more really high quality international teams than in this era...which has no stand out international teams

think of how good the brazil team that KOed England in the 02 WC was

Rivaldo, Ronaldinho,Ronaldo front line
Roberto Carlos and Cafu as FBs

If the present England team played that Brazil team of 02, they'd lose too

It is interesting comparing golden generations of the teams left.

Spain golden generation: Won the Euros 2008, would cup 2010, Euros 2012.

Italy golden generation: Back to back world cup winners.

Denmark golden generation: Won the Euros 1992 despite being massive outsiders.

England golden generation: Rooney shaagged a granny.

Which golden generation has been the best?

A lot of their downfall was about character. I noticed the irony of Ferdinand, Lampard and Cole praising the mentality of the current England squad when they were self-entitled individuals, no sense of team whatsoever.

Really turned me off international football for quite a while.

hmm, would probably have been better to stop digging, rather than advocating conscription

I think this team has enough about it to win the tournament.

No sense in comparing to previous years squads as a great deal has changed since 96, 06 etc. May as well just focus on the here and now because a squad that may have been better years ago does not translate to what is on offer now at this tournament.

I do feel like this is a strong squad all things considered, especially in attacking and full back areas. When you're looking to make changes, the difference in quality between the likes of Mount, Grealish and Foden, for example, isn't a significant difference whereas in previous years it has been.

not really sure why people are so shocked to be honest.

it was only a few years ago that we won the u17 world cup, so there was clearly a generation of players who were going to come through and who were going to be good enough to compete

agree
england have been doing v well lately in youth football...which is a big indicator as to what nations will do well in tournaments in the coming years
alot of investment in modern, high quality coaching by the big clubs and FA in recent years too
england were always gonna get close to the top in international football

Wasn't Foden meant to emulate Gazza in this tournament? Or has he just been drinking in secret? Is that what he meant?

England will 100% bottle it.

I think in the final but it would not surprise me to see the Danes pap England out. All this good run is doing is increasing the tears.

Not like England have beaten a good team yet. Easiest route to a final in international football history. A past it Germany don't count.

That said if you win it the tears will be mine.

they've had 2 major tournaments on the bounce where the draw and route through has been v v kind to them

Yes, current Germany team is a shambles and has been for a number of years...they lost at home to Macedonia in a WC qualifier just a few months back ffs

England were never gonna get a better chance of KOing the Germans...let's be honest
