Wrong tactics. Simple as that. WTF was Rashford doing.

I’m astonished at his choice of penalty takers, Saka and Sancho??? WTF.

I think Grealish has been sleeping with his wife as well, absolutely baffling how much he’s been neglected this tournament.

Shaw should have took one. He took a good one in the Europey final.

Southgate's strategy is a head-scratcher. Grealish, Sancho, and Rashford all match winners cooling their heels on the bench.

Thought Shaw would have been up for a pen.

Coming on just to take a penalty magnifies the pressure. I'd have liked to see some more attacking changes earlier.

Mount had a pretty poor game and Henderson had a shocker.

But Southgate's game management and timings of the substitutions was outstandingly bad.

It was only a matter of time before Verratti and Jorginho controlled the midfield.

Italy were the better side.

Five minutes before that scored I said to the Mrs that Southgate needs to get Mount off now and bring on Grealish. But no. The ignored me again.

Saka has never taken a penalty for Arsenal, why put him up to take the most crucial one, some of the other players were hiding.

I think bringing on 2 players in the 119th minute for the penalty shoot out just puts added pressure on those players.

It's saying to them you aren't good enough to be put on to win the game in 120 minutes, but you are there to put your penalty away.

When chiesa came off he should’ve reacted - he sat on his thumbs instead

One team wanted to play football, the other didn't. Just sucks to lose it on pens

Deserves plenty of stick. No need for England to be so negative with the players they have but he went with it so he dies on his sword.

Our pens record is not the greatest

Negative tactics from going 1-0 up cost us. If we kept hold of the ball and attacked you never know we could have avoided pens

Southgate won a lot of plaudits but he royally effed up the final.

The better team won and there's no shame in that. Every man and his dog will now go on to say how we could have won the game but for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. We've a young squad that can hopefully get to the latter stages of the next 3-5 tournaments.

I'm not angry and I'm not going to spend the next week claiming I would have done a better job than Southgate. This is the first tournament I can recall that I've genuinely felt a connection with the national team and most of them had a really good tournament. Proud of the team overall, just hope our fans don't now go and let us down. I'd reached a point where I didn't think I'd see England in a final and was fairly apathetic about it but personally feel like we've got a really good group to now build on.

He waited too long to change it—their goal was coming.

He brought on Rash and Sancho too late. And why wasn't Saka put at RB instead of Rash?

Having such a young player taking the 5th pen also not great.

Italy were fakkin filthy all game and the ref let them get away with it time & time again, yeah they dominated possession but a big part of that was continuously kicking our players with no recourse.

Always seem to be playing against 12, same with Arsenal.

Everybody facking knows that making decisions on penalty takers isn’t done by diktat.

You expect the senior players to step up to demand to take one.

They’ve left Sancho and Saka out to dry.

It takes balls to step up like they did so hats off. They will be stronger for the experience

The journey to becoming winners is dealing with the experience of failure, it makes the taste of victory a little sweeter next time around!

Those 2 will hopefully vie for top honours in the coming years!
