Look Don, I get it. you're on a massive downer with Spurs and last night's disappointing result felt like salt in the wounds (even though it was England).
If England had once again failed to win the opening game of a tournament, you could say they bottled it.
If England failed to beat Germany once again in the knockout stages of a tournament, you could say they bottled it.
If, at the umpteenth time of asking, England again failed to win a semi final, you could say they bottled it.
But to lose the final on the lottery of penalties and then to be called bottlers is very unfair and unjustified imo. And remember, this is was England's first final in 55 years!

To be fair Spurs of three or four seasons ago should have won a trophy or two. Not sure Don is comparing them to the current Spurs team. Just Spurs in general, which I think is a fair comparison. Spurs haven`t won a title in 60 years, England haven`t won a title in 55 years. Easy to see the comparison. Both have lost countless semi-finals between them, despite sometimes being the so called better side.
Not sure England are light years ahead of any team right now. They did after all only win four of their games in 90 minutes, and of those you would hardly call them difficult games Croatia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, and a not very good German side. Three of the games at Wembley, and only the easiest opposition was played away from home.
Would have been interesting how they would have faired had they been in Italy`s side of the draw.
I think England are were they usually are right now, win a few games, lose when it matters. Probably never going to win either the Euros or World Cup in the near future, unless something drastically changes, and they can start producing creative midfielders. Certainly don`t seem them winning it away from Wembley.

So why do goalkeepers study players run ups,why do players practice penalties, why do players practice the walk from the half way line to take the penalties.
Why do some teams win most and others lose most?
A lottery is all down to luck,a penalty shoot out is down to producing under intense pressure.
How can penalties be a lottery, when England have lost all but one of their 6 major shootouts?
It’s a mentality thing
Fair analysis. If we're talking about England historically, then I agree they have been bottlers.
I absolutely don't agree that this current squad are bottlers though. They reached the semi final of the world cup in 2018 and have now reached the final of the Euros. That's progression in my book.
Let's see how they get on in the WC next year, before casting final judgment.
Spurs. this current England squad, certainly are not.

Agreed. 100% it’s a mentality thing. Hence why the Germans were so good at them down the years. Wasn’t luck was it? It was balls of steel and that experience of winning major trophies. Penalties are not a lottery. Italy were always winning that last night. They had the minerals when it truly mattered. Just like if Spurs got another major final and had a penalty shoot out, I would probably bet my mortgage on Spurs losing.

Well that`s what you get in a lottery. You could toss a coin six times, and it could come down heads five times and tails just once. Not sure a coin knows about mentaility.
Bottling is when you are favourite and lose. Not sure Spurs have been favourites in a final in the last 20 years.
How can an underdog bottle it?

Sorry but let's quit this Spurs nonsense. England were never expected to get to a final. If the media got fans gassed up then then that's the media and fans issue to deal with. Nothing to do with Spurs.
We as fans need to redefine what Spurs means. If that means punching above your pay grade. Getting to finals no one expecting you to then losing despite being an underdog (even with the bookies).
Then we are victims of our own positive endeavours. Its the spoilt brat fan that is more of my issue. Yes it hurts to lose in a final but would you rather have been knocked out like Belgium in the early stages despite being world no.1
Perhaps we should coin a phrase...Belgiumy

Why is it nonsense ? What , because you don’t like to admit it ? 100% its Spursy. England are exactly like Spurs. Promise so much and get us all hyped up, yet deliver so little. Bottle it when it truly matters in semi finals and finals. The similarities between England and Spurs are incredible. Just deal with it mate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Who promised? The media? Before the tournament you would have never bet your mortgage on England to make the final.
Don't confuse media hype with reality and sense.
Having a chance of winning a cup does not make you favourite or destined to win it Therefore I don't believe an underdog can ever be a bottler. If you believe England were favourite against Italy then fair enough. But when last were Spurs favourites in a final?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
At the end of the day mate, you can dress it up all you like. You can justify it how you want mate. England reached a major final and didn’t get it over the line. England reached a World Cup semi final and didn’t get it over the line. Penalties are not a lottery at all. It’s all about composure, bottle and experience. Italy were always winning that penalty shoot out. Why ? Because they have the experience and minerals to get it over the line at the last hurdle. Spurs and England unfortunately don’t mate, end of story.

A better comparison would be with Man City's inability to win the Champions League. Again, major tactical errors were made in the final by the manager, rather then it being simply the players "bottling" it.

Yes, it is a lottery. I'm not sure why you find it so difficult to understand.
You can't guarantee every player will score every time (regardless of their nationality).
And you can't guarantee that every keeper is going to save every penalty (regardless of their nationality).
That's where it becomes a lottery.
Did you see Jorginho's penalty against Spain? Did you see what happened to his yesterday?
Did you see what one of the best players in the world (Mbappe) did with his penalty against France (a team that incidentally won the last world cup)?

How can penalties be a lottery, when England have lost all but one of their 6 major shootouts?
