Thats true Darren.

I guess by winning something I would mean he has to challenge for the league and win a cup in my opinion with that squad. Rather than just finish 4th and win a cup.

Especially if you add Varane to it. If he can't sustain a challenge and get some silverware with that then he should be sacked imo.

The bookies still have us as 4th favourites and I think that's about right. Watching our first choice right back in preseason is giving me flashbacks of the end of last season when he really struggled with concentration issues. I can see why we are being linked with Trippier. Add deficiencies at CB and in midfield (possibly going to be exacerbated by a potential Pogba departure) and I think we're still not as strong as City, Liverpool (who I think will reclaim the title) and Chelsea.

Whilst I really like us heading into the new season and expect us to push all the way, especially with VVD back and Konate in. Plus I'm expecting a midfielder such as Bissouma to join and Mane to remember how to play football, I still don't see us winning it.

City are just a step ahead.

The context matters, though. What Liverpool did is kind of irrelevant, it’s unprecedented and (despite their protestations) relied on some unbelievable luck to drag the team up to where it was.

If City get Kane and are back at the level they were a couple of years ago, a failure to compete with that - and break our club record points total to achieve this - isn’t really a sackable offence.

Even if Kane goes to City though it is only a maximum of 6 points that the signing would directly effect. Of course I wouldn’t slate Ole if Kane goes to City, they get 100+ points and they break all records. But if Kane does go there and we get 70-80 points and still play less than exciting football it will feel that the squad is being undermanaged. A top manager with the squad that Ole is likely going to go into this season should be looking at 85-90 points. Especially with how weak the standard of the league is these days.

That if he made City the worlds greatest team, in theory it would only effect 6 potential points per season we could get (ie, from City).

Yeah I get that, but that’s the context isn’t it? I’m talking more from what is a justifiable sacking - for fans and the club. I think sacking him now is justifiable for the crap football we serve up, but that’s a different debate.

I do agree with the general point, though. You look at Chelsea, City, Liverpool, Spurs and Leicester over the last few years and they’ve all achieved things that were above (in some cases far above) what you would deem par, or realistic, expectations.

You can’t really say the same for us, which is pretty damning.

We’ve (as fans) gone from winning two trophies under Jose and getting 81 points which at the time was considered ‘so what, winning the big trophies is all that matters’ to ‘we have to knock everything down to start again just to be proud after 3 seasons to not even be at the same point’ which I find most amusing.

It’s what happens when the manager is bulletproof with a large section of the fans. Remember what Liverpool fans were like with Dalglish? Or Chelsea fans with Lampard?

Atleast they can be semi justified by club legend status, it's the Arsenal fans/Arteta loving i find bizzare (not so much here but social media and fans channel), he was literally an ok player in the peak Wenger banter era.

He took over a team that finished second on 81 points the year before. Has spent close to 400 million, hasn't won a trophy, and going into the season we are 4th favourites?
