Conspiracy pandemic

These people are of the opinion that lockdowns don't work. The thing is though the best way to go about 'proving' that is to actually adhere to the lockdown rules. If they don't then they can't say it doesn't work as it won't have been actioned as it should.

Kate Sherimani is truly scary. She thinks this is all some satanic plan and calls the vaccine the mark of the beast. The sad part of all of this is the rapidly growing number of people thinking the likes of Katie Hopkins, Alex Jones and worst of all, David Icke are truth providers.

Russian troll farms are having a field day and the west is suffering from classic divide and conquer tactics.

My current debates are with people calling for ivermectin to be used. I provided the latest kill shot to their claims with the latest great white hope Ivermectin paper being discredited as it was seemingly written by a 13 year old science student. Of course apparently that’s censorship 🤔

Agree with pretty much all of this. For me, it’s combination of a few things, such as:

- Solipsism. We often feel we have more control over external events than we really do, so when something undesirable persists for a long period, it can be hard to deal with.

- The Dunning-Kruger effect. A lot of people who are not very bright (and I am not claiming to be very bright) are simply unable to accept that people can know and understand things that they can’t, that there can be experts in fields about which they don’t understand the first thing. So vaccines must be treated with extreme suspicion, and every new variant simply has to be a lie.

- Skewed morals. Protesting against the removal of freedoms is a praiseworthy thing, but when those freedoms are temporarily removed to tackle a natural threat, there isn’t really anybody to protest about. Also, discrimination is a terrible thing, but I’m not sure Covid passports (though I’m generally not a fan) are really discriminatory.

- Belonging. As you said, a lot of people want to be part of something, to have an identity, and being a “freedom fighter” gives them this. Extreme gullibility also helps.

- In the UK as a specific case, we have a pretty awful government, as uncaring as it is incompetent. This gives rise to quite understandable grievances, which unfortunately get lost in all this nonsense. A lot of the people these protesters call “sheep” probably dislike the government more than they do.

We’ve got these protests in Sydney and Melbourne too. I know I should feel sorry for the majority of these people as they’re mostly the type who walk through life with empty heads just waiting for their minds to be filled with some kind of guff to get them through the day but a small(ish) part of me wouldn’t be too sad if that was the day a few escaped wild tigers and bears descended onto the scene and carnage ensued.

As George Carlin said..

‘Think how stupid the average person is and realise half of them are stupider than that’.

That’s the problem. There is no debating with people like this. Any evidence is fake, any news from the ‘MSM’ is fake and you’re just a sheep. Then they’ll go watch a YouTube video from freedomwarrior234687 and believe every word of it.

Ironically this government started the ‘we’ve had enough of experts’ movement during brexit.

The funny thing about protesting lockdowns and vaccines simultaneously is that we would still be in lockdown if we didn’t have so many people vaccinated.

It’s one of the things that infuriates me about these people. I can understand someone feeling very strongly about lockdowns, or even being hesitant about the vaccines. But a lot of these people are against every single method you could use to tackle a pandemic: lockdowns, social distancing, masks, testing, track and trace, vaccines, vaccine passports… What they’re against is inconvenience, or life not being as pleasant as it was two years ago, so obviously somebody must be to blame. The “Show Your Smile” slogan just shows the truly infantile mentality of these people - that if you just remain happy in the face of a threat, it will magically disappear.

I do worry, as others have said, about a Capitol-style event here or, more realistically, some poor doctor becoming the next Jo Cox

People, especially these days hate to admit they’re wrong. Look at Brexit. Clearly a much worse idea than what I imagine so many of the people who voted for it thought yet I guarantee a huge swath of those people double down on their belief it was the right choice. SS,d with COVID denial. People are scared to look stupid yet the true sign of intelligence is admitting you were duped and now see where you went wrong.

I watched a documentary on people who ‘left’ the Qanon cult and I had massive respect for the people who looked deeper into the claims and walked away. I didn’t think they were stupid, I thought they were actually smarter than most for being able to walk away.

Exactly. Gove was, sadly, correct when he said that.

It’s also a really odd mix of far left and far right at these rallies. Have we ever seen that before?

In the US, it seems to be more clear-cut left v right. But, yes, I saw someone the other day talking about these “strange bedfellows”. At the extreme ends though, ideas converge.

I wonder how much they would like freedom of choice if I was smoking next to their precious little kiddies.

Fock the lot of them, hopefully all fall foul to the darwin effect.

That’s the saddest part, especially with antivaxxers, it’s fine then not taking the vaccine-they’ll likely pay for that. But their kids won’t be given the choice because these idiot parents believe everything they read on Twitter and Facebook.

When I was a kid my Nan told my mum not to give me the whooping cough vax because she had a terrible reaction to it. I got whooping cough and was really ill for a couple of weeks. Luckily didn’t do any long term damage.

Loved my nan but ffs

Some people might take great faith from not being vaxxed, it might give them strength in times of trouble, much like the fairy stories in those books you mentioned
