Had a shocker against Switzerland.

-------------------------------------------

He wasn't great to say the least but if it hadn't been for Varane it would've been a lot worse for France. He was holding that defence together, sort of.

Ruben Dias had a few shockers for Portugal but we know he's class. You can't read too much into one off games.

I didn't think Varane had a shocker against Switzerland. Defending is all about systems and the way France was set up made them defensively vulnerable. Put a good defender in an unstable defensive system and there's only so much they can do.

I think he'd be OK with Pogba and a top class DM in front of him...

Ok, your opinion, but he lost his man for their second goal (complete free header), was positionally suspect for their third and Switzerland also had a goal ruled out he would have been culpable for.

What concerns me is his pace, and his age. Not sure if he was ever rapid, but we all know the CB partner for Harry needs to have strong recovery pace. I don’t see that he has that, or that it will last very long even if he does at his age.

Anyway, cba talking about it any more, but just not convinced he is the top class cb signing some are making him out to be - although I hope so! Have mentioned before, just happy united are actively trying to improve the first XI!

He's better than Lindelof in terms of physicality and technique. Having occasionally watched him play, cannot make judgments RN. I hope he's fees and wages get justified as the season rolls on. But for now, my unpopular opinion is that his price/fees are inflated because he's extremely well decorated in the trophies dept. and that he play(s/ed) for Royal Madrid.

He hasn't declined in any way, it's more hear-say than anything. I think we need a RM fan to confirm, where's itsonlyagame when you need him

--------------------------------------------

I asked peks a few weeks back and he said he'd been quite poor over the last couple of seasons, making quite a few mistakes.

Not sure if I trust Peks more than IOAG, not sure why

He is quick though, it's one of his obvious, stand out attributes. I always get suspicious when I see people say he isn't good and then refer to him as slow or not very fast. I don't watch him week by week, at least not this last season, he could well make lots of mistakes etc and I'm willing to accept someone's opinion in that sense but if you say that and then refer to him as slow or whatever, I immediately have to think you're just repeating what you've seen said - not to say you personally are but it's what my mind goes to when I see something like that. It's like someone saying Maguire isn't good in the air as part of why he isn't good. It just isn't true.

He's really fast and Madrid supposedly were willing to make him captain, along with his most recent contract offer, so they clearly rate him, even if he had a poor year by his standards. They aren't getting rid of him, they are reluctant to let him go but he seemingly wants a new challenge and that seems a legit claim from what I'm seeing.

The Prem could end up being tok much for him, he could fail but at the price, we'd be absolutely stupid to not sign a player like him. If he went to PSG and we ended up with Pau Torres and he then struggled whilst Varane was successful in France, you can absolutely bet that everybody would be saying how we lack knowledge in the transfer market, it was an obvious opportunity that we'd let slip etc etc etc

He doesn’t want a new contract. He’s formally told them he wants to leave, that’s the difference between him and Ramos.

Real also are desperate for Mbappe, need to cut the wage bill and can’t afford to let him go for free.

So much negativity purely because he’s leaving Madrid. He’s a Massive improvement on Lindelof and now in his prime. His motivation is high, he wants to join us

He’s either fast or he’s quite slow then, depending who you listen to.

He's fast and certainly more so than Lindelof or Maguire. Physical attributes are much easier to see than mental or technical ones. Someone can be a terrible player but be absolutely rapid. Nobody can deny Dan James is fast.

You can watch some match highlights and see his physical attributes, even if you can't trust them for a consistent view on more technical or mental attributes.

Rapid compared to what? He may well have lost a little bit of pace since the earlier part of his career but if Varane was never what you would call rapid I don't know what CB is.

I've researched this, and it seems to depend on whether he's running or walking

Oddschecker isn't reporting any open books on him now... he might be on to something
