BBC reporting Varane fee agreed

They're a bit late to the party.

I'll not believe it until The Mur Man confirms that his sources say it's happening

I watched a Rio video earlier from today and he said it was done also, extremely confidently.

Very happy if this goes through. Great change in operations so far.

Anyone think we’ll get a third in? Could be incredible!

Good news, great to get a couple of key signings done early.

£34m plus add ons, sounds as if they’re nailed on to be met given the £50m is being touted as a sure thing we’ll be paying.

Sancho fee is relatively small in terms of what we pay this season too isn’t it with the rest over the next few years?

Should have some money left for a fckin DM/CM surely, regardless of what happens to Pogba (which sorting him out needs to happen soon as possible).

Still think Trippier coming will happen too nearer the end of the window, no rush on that one as he’ll take no time to settle, knows half the team and the league already.

Back in the day when a story came out on BBC it was practically set it stone; is that still the case these days out of interest?

‘Near to joining’

‘Final details still to be agreed’

Is this just the same as the Twitter blokes that've been saying similar every day for a month?

I'd be surprised if 2 was our 'lot' for the summer window. Although saying that, it is still more than £100 million even if both are good value in the grand scheme of things. I wouldn't be surprised if we did need to see one or two leave before we go back again.

This will take us past RB Leipzig (£92m) as this window’s top spenders

Sancho money is paid over 5 years though, and only £34m up front for Varane. So not too bad all in one hit.

i thought that add-ons making up 1`/3 of the fee was quite unusual, and almost unheard of when buying an experienced, established, player, but that makes more sense

Maybe more to do with when he makes X amount of appearances etc rather than the ones you see added on to promising young players like if they win the Ballon D’or.

The fee for Varane will also be paid over a number of years according to Ornstein although it's not clear how many.

110m for two quality players in their position, one with a decade plus ahead of him and the other a serial winner and only 28

Great business by the club, don’t say that often

Yeah but they all are, aren't they? So it isn't like its just those 2 we're paying for, we'll still be paying for previous transfers as well. We will probably owe an eye watering amount of money for transfers over the last 3-4 years, it won't be like we have a clean slate and just slapped Sancho and Varane on the credit card.

I THINK Maguire may have been a bit different but generally it isn't just straight up cash as a balance transfer.

Not sure tbh, I didn’t think we’d managed to agree decent deals like this in recent years.

Or I've completely misunderstood how transfers are generally paid for/spread on the books. I definitely don't have any actual knowledge of it.

posted on 26/7/21

Sky reckon the fee is £41m including the add-ons.

posted on 26/7/21

I might be confusing the actual physical payment with how it's spread on the books. It's not something I've properly explored, more just what I've read/heard over the years but I didn't think they are typically paid for up front. I'm sure one of the things with the Ronaldo to Madrid deal was that we were insisting on cash up front and it was more of an exception than the rule.

Bah, if anyone more knowledgeable can clarify, I'd be glad for them to do so.

On amortisation and transfers I should have added.

That seems more likely. The 50m being quoted is most likely Euros and BBC have got a bit mixed up by quoting it as GBP. I'll not be surprised if we see a later edit. For one thing, a third of the fee being add-ons seems huge. For another, everywhere else is quoting it as closer to your figure (which works out at 50 million Euros).

the books bit is easy: buy a player for, say, £50m, on a 5 year deal, and you stick £10m of amortisation through the profit and loss each year (and the asset will reduce by £10m on your balance sheet each year)

payment structures are completely separate, and entirely up to the two parties, but you're right that in general they are spread over a few years (and i think you are right about maguire too, have a feeling we paid the entirety of that in one go)
