Am I alone in finding Varane a tad over rated? Certainly an upgrade on Lindelof and Baily but always seemed to need his hand held by Ramos .

United have a very good squad these days. Still a CM and a striker away from winning anything of note for me. They also drop too many points against teams they should be beating get enough points over 38 games.

I don't have them any higher than 4th myself.

They do have goals through the side but they certainly don't have a 20 league goal striker, or anywhere near one, and their midfield is bobbins.

Fair few games they scrapped arguably undeserved points last season too and I think there are huge question marks over both goalkeepers.

I think they'll be pretty close to us in 3rd. I don't see more than 10-15 points between 1st-4th this season though. Should be a good one.

Can we do a count of how many people think that is the team to win the league please?

So far I count one but it'd be good to get clarification.

United were an odd team last season. They looked quite poor at times in a lot of games but would have a 20 minute spell and win the game. Had a lot of poor first halves and often finished strong.

I think they still lack balance in the middle of the park, with an attacking Bruno, a hot and cold Pogba, and the nothing more than decent McFred combo.

If they sell Pogba and get in a quality CM to dictate possession a bit better then they have a nicely balanced XI, albeit it that it relies on an old striker.

Chelsea need to get a finisher in.

They certainly did well under Tuchel last season but teams will learn how to frustrate them and lacking a quality finisher could undermine their ambitions.

Yet to see them react to any real adversity. Jury still out for me.

I don’t think Varane is overrated - he’s clearly a quality player but there’s certainly doubts about whether he can be his quality self in the PL.

Real Madrid were also a defensive team last year. They scored the same as A.Madrid

Dave is more than likely off either towards the end of summer or January - Dean Henderson is the goalkeeper.

Trippier is going to start at right back - very much being brought in for Aaron to learn the offensive side of playing fullback from.

We won't be playing 4-2-3-1, Ole doesn't feel it's getting the most out of Bruno and Paul and is too focused on being solid. We're going to play a
4-1-2-1*-2 where the 1* is a free role for Sancho or Lingard, or a classic 4-3-3 with a central striker and two narrow wing forwards. Either way, Pogba and Fernandes will have a player behind them and licence to link up and roam.

United should sign Fabinho, that would take them up a level and put Liverpool down a level. Then United would only have City to worry about.

We'll see. It has been Ramos that has been the heart beat of that team and although you cite their defensive record this season, they didnt win anything and had to play a much tighter more disciplined team game to remain in contention.

I am not saying he's a poor player I am just not convinced he's the world class CB some make him out to be and also think that the PL will be an entirely different challenge for him, which may take some getting used to. He will certainly help you in playing out from the back more than the other options.

Before I make the second comment I'm going to say I think Varane will be a top signing. He's strong, quick, good on the ball and bags of experience. Absolutely no reason why that wouldn't translate to the EPL. I understand there's a school of thought saying his performances for RM haven't been the best recently but I'd say it's difficult to be at a club for 10 years and retain the form and focus without a dip. Plus that team is clearly coming to the end of it's cycle.

Right, all that said. For France he played alongside Pavard, Umtiti and Hernandez with Kante acting as the shield! You could have put Phil Jones in there and France would have won.

Varane became massively overrated the moment it looked like he was more likely than not to sign for United.

Nah I didn't really rate him at all until a couple of weeks ago. Now I rate him as one of if not the best centre back in the world. Although I've never seen him play.

I'm not going to pretend I watch him a lot, but he is always in the top 5 of the best CB's in the world lists and his stats back that up. Do you watch him on a regular basis? He has looked good whenever I have seen him play.

Big believer in class is permanent myself and feel he is a great signing but there are plenty who watch La Liga more than me who say he is in quite a steep decline.

Must admit it's not often Madrid let quality leave but we will see.

I agree he's not overrated but not sure you want to go down the route of claiming he's good based on how many goals Madrid concede given he was part of a defence that conceded 41, 44 and 46 between 2016-2019
