They can't. The whole thing has been carefully constructed for months to allow Messi to get the move he's wanted for a year whilst not being the bad guy, and the Barca board to have their hands tied. He could have signed a deal for 100k a week and stayed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well apparently La LIga rules mean he can't accept less than 50% of his former contract from Barca.
How can they do that when he is out of contract and essentially a new player.
I think it's to do with Spanish employment law.
They should have sold him last year.
This latest development seems very amateur. Makes ne think it's been engineered by Barca so that they don't look like the bad guys. They can blame La Liga now

No. Even without Messi's wage entirely Barca are at 95% of their wage to revenue ratio, it needs to be at 70%.
They still need to shift more.
I have a business in Spain, and the employment laws here are silly.
Regardless, Barca cannot register players right now. Even if they paid him £0.

So did we

Barca don’t have some rich American to pay the bill
Big problem for Barça is getting rid of the big earners. They can't afford to buy them out of their contracts and nobody wants to pay their extortionate wages.
These 2 alone make another Messi sized wage which would bring down the revenue to wage ratio to 80% (still too high)
Griezmann - £594k (£30. 888m)
Coutinho - £406k (£21.112m)
Would still need 4 of these to bring it down below the required 70%
Busquetes/Pjanic - £271k (£14.092m)
Alba/Umtiti/Dembele - £212k (£11. 024)
That is some serious wage bill. Still needing to shed £1.666m per WEEK to get within the salary cap.
Sorry, forgot to provide the link. Barça's total player wage bill including Messi was £4,586,800pw (£238,513,600pa). Absolutely insane.

That doesn't include Aguero, Depay, Garcia that they've signed in the summer. All frees, so all will be picking up a fortune.
