Top girl.

A real rivalry born there in that game, I’m looking forward to them playing again at Wimbledon.

Fair enough, but for others it must have been close to their firsts too.

Why are you so determined to undermine her achievement?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not. It's just some of the reaction has gone a bit OTT. One of those pundits said it was the greatest sporting achievement ever. Hmmm not sure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well.it's never been done before, so that's pretty special.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know but quite the claim.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But it’s the manner of her victory. She’s not dropped a set in the whole tournament, and she’s playing to a level way beyond her experience. People are excited that we’re looking at a British multiple grand slam winner.

Indeed. Obviously it's easy for me to say this in hindsight, but pretty much when Ash Barty got knocked out I felt she had a genuine chance of winning it as that's how well she'd been playing.

I know it's a very impressive achievement, even though you have to tread carefully when you talk about women players going on to win multiple slams. Lots of them don't go on to fulfil their potential.

The achievement itself, though stunning, impressed me less than how good she actually is at tennis. You could see it at Wimbledon as well. Incredible hitting and able to produce ferocious winners on the run. Looks like a phenomenal player.

This is true. Beneath and beyond the Williams sisters, it’s been a bit of a free-for-all, with lots of good players not quite maintaining form and a couple seeming to struggle with being number 1 when they get there.

Yeah the last decade has not seen anyone other than Serena really dominate in the game. A few hyped up players pick up no more than 2 or 3 slams and that's it. You have to go back to Sharapova for anyone who has made more of their promising talent.

Unlike in the men's game where we've been spoiled to see Federer, Nadal and Djok all do it together in the same era.

This is the problem with women in the workplace generally, easily distracted - very few Maggie Thatcher types about, most get a promotion then immediately get up the duff and ask for a year off. Now they’re talking about offering them on the blob days off. Sorry but they can’t be relied upon with that sort of biology, which is why I don’t believe in equal opportunities.

It's only that Serena is so biologically similar to a bloke that she's been able to veer away from the trend and dominate so much in the women's game.
