I think both Cavani and Ronaldo were instant decisions rather than pre-planned. Cavini fit into a plan of boosting the striker options, but I am sure we were looking for a longer term solution (our pursuit of Hallaand showed that). Ronaldo is probably the only one that was surplus to our needs and was just a cherry on top after getting a promising young player (Sancho) and a top level player in his prime (Varane).

On Matic though if we could somehow combine him, Fred and McT that would be great. In the time we have neglected the midfield we probably could have commissioned a cloning device to get the next Scholes, Keane and Robson.

I remember SAF defending Hansen a bit in his first book by saying something similar.

Yeah had forgotten about Mata.
With the younger players it's an odd one as they were definitely for the future so I'd resigned myself to seeing them after a season or so and thought fair enough. The DVB situation I didn't forsee as I thought he was "ready" to get more game time fairly straight away.
I get the Ronaldo signing and was all for the cavani one at the time. Just seems like we have spent a lot of money but will need to spend a lot more regardless of Ole staying

Matic and Mata are nothing to do with our current planning. They were not bought with the future of the club in mind.

He took over a team who finsihed second the previous year, under a manager who had won 2 trophies.
He has won zero trophies, and best finish is second.
And we are favourites to finish 4th this year... what track are we on, apart from biggest wage bill and spenders in the league.
