As a boy I had a picture of Jimmy up on my bedroom wall with his Chelsea kit on, it must have been circa 1957/58, he was one side of a pic of the 1958 Spurs team which I had cut out of a newspaper, on the other side was a newspaper cutting of a young 17 year old Pele carrying a flag around in Sweden after Brazil had won the 1958 World Cup. They were the only three pics I ever put up as a kid.

Two were my heroes and of course one was my team.

Two legends gone

My first tastes of footy were pretty much watching these two on Saint and Greavsie. Good times.

Jimmy Greaves was the greatest player I’ve ever seen, period. He was my first hero as a young boy and my bedroom wall was covered in posters of him, including a huge print by Paul Trevillion, artist and Spurs fan. We lived in south London so I was not allowed to travel to White Hart Lane until I attended secondary school. But I did manage one trip to see my hero before then, my elder brother took me to see Spurs play Bristol City in the fifth round of the FA Cup when I was 10 years old, the date was the 11th of March 1967 and we won 2-0. Both goals courtesy of Greavesie, I was beside myself with excitement. I went as often as I could after that, watching him play for the best part of three years was the most memorable time of my Spurs-supporting life. I can’t remember all of the games, but part from the above mentioned game I have vivid memories of these three games at WHL:
20/04/1968 Spurs 4 Coventry 2 (Mackay, Greaves 2, Jones)
07/09/1968 Spurs 7 Burnley 0 (Chivers, Greaves 3 [1p], Jones 2, Robertson)
16/11/1968 Spurs 5 Sunderland 1 (Greaves 4, England)
The last game in particular he played out of his skin, one of his goals he seemed to dribble around practically all of Sunderland’s outfield players before bamboozling the keeper. I was absolutely devastated when we sold him to West Ham in 1970, I even bore a grudge for a while against the great Bill Nicholson! (Sacrilege I know).
Goodbye Jimmy, you’ll never know how much pleasure you gave to a young boy from a council estate in southeast London, you are the greatest ever to pull on a Spurs shirt.
