I'll mention Leighton James, Heb.

I remember, when we knew he was going to sign, thinking, he will be the final piece in the jigsaw (which is what the great Dave Mackay himself believed). But LJ never seemed to settle and I don't really recall him having one good game for us. At the time he cost a bomb but, in my view, never lived up to the expectation.

Another who failed, and this time miserably, was Derek Hales who also cost a fortune. Not only did he not score goals but also he did little else of note.

All of which goes to show that there are no guarantees re signings. Even Cloughie got it wrong occasionally (or should I say Peter Taylor?) Remember Pat Wright, signed from Shrewsbury and wasn't there an Arthur Stewart? The only good things about them were the low transfer fees.

Too many to whittle down to one Chicago :
Igor Stimac, Paulo Wanchope, Colin Todd, Roy Mac, King Kevin, Dave Mackay, Charlie George, Dean Saunders, Bobby Davison, Eranio, Biano....Paul McGrath....

Pat Wright later opened a football skills school. The ultimate example of he who can does, he who can't teaches. Arthur Stewart was so slow he made Jason Shackell look sprightly.

We were top of the league when James came, not for much longer though. He was a poor signing and never reached what he did at Burnley.

My favourite player was Kevin Hector
The best player I've ever seen in a Rams shirt was Colin Todd.
And the best team I've seen is:-

...................................Boulton

Webster.......Todd.......McFarland.........Nish

.........Osman..........Gemmill.........Mount

........Hector.............George.............Hinton

Subs...Mackay, W Hughes, C Martin, Durban, Shilton, Rioch.

VC, that's a really interesting team. Osman and Mount. It's so easy to over-estimate players from long ago because of nostalgia and so hard to compare with the current day. I would not have thought of Osman but that's a terrific team.

Dunno about Boulton though, despite him having the same birthday as me and being the only player to play in every match of both title wins. Think I would go for Poom though Shilton's display in a 0-0 at Newcastle away was the most incredible I have seen.

Off topic, I know, but Arsenal have graciously agreed to defer the outstanding current transfer fee instalment due to them for Bielik (1.4 million.) This will help enormously both re finance generally and re not provoking EFL. Good on you, you Gunners!

Why is anyone putting Chris Martin anywhere near our best every player list?
Bang average 2nd level player at best (as proven by his career stats)

And yes, hats off to Arsenal for helping us out. 😊

Might be based on his goal contribution Peeder, 76 goals in total whilst representing Derby. First player in almost 30 years to break into Derby's top twenty all time leading goal scorers.

Would have been many more if he hadn't been treated so disrespectfully and due to his illness.

McFarland or Stimac for me, but the chasing pack is talent rich, Hector, McGrath, George, Wright..........et al.
We’ve had some great players

posted on 6/10/21

Wright was better than Stimac and less injured. I never saw the 1970’s team I 1st went in 1982 so Saunders and Wright are the best players I’ve seen

Thanks Vidal when I looked at the team I picked it made me shudder with excitement! Maybe it is a bit too attacking, perhaps a fit Thorne could be in.

Colin Boulton was a terrific goalie, but Shilton wasn't too bad,

The best ever season for me was 68/69 when we got promoted. I was single then and could go to nearly every game without an earbashing and it was such a nice surprise to be winning all the time. It was a sad day when Clough and Taylor left.

We played against the best in the best league in the world in those days and we were hugely feared by such as Arsenal, Liverpool, Leeds, Chelsea and the rest. I clearly remember Hughes (the Liverpool skipper) bemoaning the fact that, straight after they had won. their FA Cup round they found out that their next round was V Derby County and thus had no time to celebrate with such a tough next fixture. This was his comment on an experiment to hold the draw just after the Saturday games were finished. We were truly a great team in those years.

I think Charlie George of Kevin Hector alongside John O'Hare and Alan Hinton were the best with Dave McKAY and Paul McGrath not far short. Peter Shilton and Mart Poom, our best goalkeepers.

68/69 was my first season so I had no yardstick to measure it by. I just assumed it was normal that we won every week. I was too young really to appreciate how good the players were.

66/67 was my first year attending regularly and it was dire. Clough's first season we ended one place lower but you could see things changing. Then the magic started.....<champagne>

I was only around 8 or 9 when Toddy arrived but I remember marvelling at how good he was. Some players just make your jaw drop. Charlie was another one like that, just on another level. Since then we have been lucky enough to see some very good players indeed - Baiano, Eranio, Asanovic and McGrath for example - but I don't think we will ever have players again who you felt were the best that there were, anywhere.
