What I liked about Cole is when he got the ball he scored a goal. Andy Andy Cole.

For his first couple of seasons he wasn’t thought of as a success signing. It was really only 97/98 where he started being the player we hoped he’d be. I think we would have sold him had we gotten Shearer in 1996. Possibly to Blackburn. He and Sharpey were my fave players as a kid and I’m glad he got past the pneumonia and double leg break setbacks to become one of our best ever strikers.

Folk used to sing a version of that song at me and inevitably it would me up as a teenager. I snapped one day and kicked a lad down the stairs but my shoe had those hooks for laces that caught his arm and tore into it, blood all over his shirt. Still have real regrets over the incident. 25 years later.

Learned self control not long aftewards.

Cole and Yorke though. Great pairing.

Remember him being 2 in 6, ridiculed, Ipswich hold the whole team’s beer and he’s 7 in 7.

Apart from a few seasonal blips, he fcking killed it for us

The Cole and Yorke step-over goal is top 3 for sure.

We were up against some high class players at the time, holy sht were they top dogs across the tournament, but we classed out that season; the Cole and Yorke goal was a pure catalyst, IMO.

World class frontline that shook Europe with that goal, and the rest 😁.

Cole has a bit of a unusual legacy imo. Third highest EPL scorer, bucket load of trophies and part of a fantastic strike partnership and team. And yet (outside of Utd fans) I’m not sure he’s considered one of the greats.

I think he suffers a bit from being in Shearers era and the commonly held view that he was the striker that Utd really wanted. Also the (unfair) view that anyone would do well in front of that Utd midfield. I looked up his goals record - he never hit 20 league goals for Utd in any season which slightly surprised me. There was always the view that he missed a lot of chances, I’m not sure if that was true or not.

Never really had much of an international chance either, probably because of the same alternative number 9.

Good to see articles like this because I think he’s a bit of a forgotten man of the EPL era.

Cole suffers from the England team obsession with white strikers during that era.

Cole, Wright and Ferdinand hardly got a sniff.

Then again, Shearer, Sheringham, Fowler and Owen were no mugs…

Cole was lethal.

It's crazy the amount of top English strikers around all at once in his era.

Cole, Wright and Ferdinand never really took their club form into internationals. Fowler also, who should have done more than any of those three.

He was well past his peak when he played for City, but he still had that instinct for goal that great strikers have. Has had lots of bad luck with health since his retirement. Would be interesting to hear more from him as a pundit.

He was, also used to miss a fair few I recall, but with Yorke they were deadly.

Unfortunately for Coley he didn’t take his chances for England at a time where he needed to almost score a hattrick to keep his place. I think it was the Uruguay game in the mid 90s where he was talked up as someone who HAD to start for England and hit the crossbar (think that was the infamous Teddy Sheringham game) and after that his England games dwindled

I remember coming home from school and my dad asking me who we had signes.

I must admit, Cole wasnt top of the list, but a great signing.

Andy Cole was great, he should have been given more chances for England. It was annoying that Sheringham was always ahead of Cole and Fowler for England.

True but that is the only thing England have won since 1966. That was a good tourney actually.
Carlos' free-kick and Scholes doing Italy over.

I know it’s fashionable to say this current England side is the best since 1966 but I think the 96-98 England side were much better. Had they had Denmark instead of Germany in the semis in 96 I’m sure they would have made the final.
