As for asylum, it should be limited to those with identification, genuine reason for seeking asylum, and a good reason for not seeking it on route to Britain.
Its easy to just see numbers, but these are real people, each requiring housing, medical assistance, education, financial support.

It is far easier to illegally migrate to UK/US than it is to legally migrate
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Once these ‘illegal’ immigrants arrive on shore - please enlighten me on how easy their lives are? What do they get on arrival and are there lives better off than ‘legal’ immigrants?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am not aware of UK but in America illegal immigrants can pick up any jobs right from a sweeper to a taxi driver to a 7-11 attendant. Personally know plenty of illegals. Plus they don't have to pay taxes since they are undocumented.
For legal immigrants you are completely bending yourself to the government. Work visas are modern day slavery. America needs legal immigrants that are highly skilled like engineers, doctors, scientists and yet USCIS is bent on making their life difficult. As a legal immigrant your entire immigration status is dependent on your employment. If you get fired leave the country along with your family within 60 days. Plus you are paying more taxes than residents.
Illegals can go fack themselves/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
‘Illegals’. Lovely.
Take out the ‘illegals’ from the USA and the country falls in on itself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why so much love for the illegals?
Also isn't it well documented that in Sweden or was in Norway you had Muslim refugees/ immigrants who catcalled/ sexually harassed/r@ped women because it was the cultural thing to do where they came from?
If you are immigrating to a new country you should accept the local way of life.

I trust you can appreciate many of those trying to get to the UK from conflict etc may not have ID on them.
There are EU databases (finger print recognition, real time data etc) the Home Office used to use to speed up/aid the asylum process, however the Home Office no longer has access to them. Which has put an immense strain on resources. Coupled with staffing cuts etc.

Ah, so your demonisation of ‘immigrants’ is that despite the evidence that 99.999999% of them are good for the backbone of the countries economy the one or two who do bad things mean the ‘tap’ should be turned off. Great.
Plus, I’m fairly certain you’re moving the goalposts from ‘illegals are bad’ to ‘actually I don’t like legals too if they’re not watching Songs of Praise and eating a roast lamb on a Sunday with Yorkshire puddings.

I really don't understand that term "alien" when home office bestowed on someone 😂
As I understand it, Australia make it easier for folk to immigrate to fulfil certain job criteria. I'm not for free movement, I think the UK offer easy a life compared to other EU nations.
For us, right now, the obvious roles are things like HGV drivers, software developers, doctors.
I think that's the happy medium, if people provide a clear net gain for the nation, I don't understand why anybody would have a problem with folk immigrating.

The majority of people are influenced by their own experinces, not the media.
First of all, I think worthwhile pointing out that the OP's generalisation that Left = unrestricted immigration / Right = no immigration is pretty warped. 'Open borders' is an extreme and marginal position on the Left. And on the right, you need to make a distinction between *economic* right wing policies (which tend to rely on letting the market decide everything) and nationalist right-wing politics, which are tend toward seeing the nation as ethnically homogeneous and therefore toward seeing immigration as a threat. The Tories are a bit of both, and therefore fluctuate on exact immigration policies (sounding and to some extent being hostile for the benefit of their voters, while often taking a slightly softer line for the benefit of their donors). Labour has a history of quite often playing to public scepticism about immigration, so definitely isn't consistently committed to unrestricted movement of people.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Countless reasons. Language, culture, family connections, financial. And also misinformation from traffickers.
Another widely held perception is that asylum seekers have to claim asylum the first safe country in which they arrive.
https://www.amnesty.org.uk/truth-about-refugees
The UK also houses considerably less asylum seekers than its neighbours.

Do you think Emanuel Macaron banning the burqa is right or wrong?
Haven't read the whole thread, but those who advocate "only letting in the good migrants", i.e. only access to skilled workers - do you realise that the corollary of that approach would be a national policy that the worst paid, least skilled, least attractive jobs have to be done by UK citizens. Give it a couple of decades and you'll have resentment that immigrants are visibly better off than the indigenous under-class.

Yep. The state shouldn’t interfere with religious freedom.
You can't be against immigration and for cutting foreign aid really.
Some immigration is obviously good (how else would we have Ole as manager?) but we also need to look at the issue of why people are moving. If they'd have a safe environment at home perhaps that need is lessened? Of course you'll always get people wanting to experience different things and the jobs they can do are only available in certain places but, on the whole, I believe when people are happy they stay where they are.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ah, so your demonisation of ‘immigrants’ is that despite the evidence that 99.999999% of them are good for the backbone of the countries economy the one or two who do bad things mean the ‘tap’ should be turned off. Great.
Plus, I’m fairly certain you’re moving the goalposts from ‘illegals are bad’ to ‘actually I don’t like legals too if they’re not watching Songs of Praise and eating a roast lamb on a Sunday with Yorkshire puddings.
At least while people don’t commit rape and other horrific crimes.

Irrespective legal or not, both are called aliens - welcome to our country!
WTF is that all about?

I really don't understand that term "alien" when home office bestowed on someone 😂

As I understand it, Australia make it easier for folk to immigrate to fulfil certain job criteria. I'm not for free movement, I think the UK offer easy a life compared to other EU nations.
For us, right now, the obvious roles are things like HGV drivers, software developers, doctors.
I think that's the happy medium, if people provide a clear net gain for the nation, I don't understand why anybody would have a problem with folk immigrating.

We should look to educate / qualify those already here before importing a workforce.
As for asylum, it should be limited to those with identification, genuine reason for seeking asylum, and a good reason for not seeking it on route to Britain.
Its easy to just see numbers, but these are real people, each requiring housing, medical assistance, education, financial support.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I trust you can appreciate many of those trying to get to the UK from conflict etc may not have ID on them.
There are EU databases (finger print recognition, real time data etc) the Home Office used to use to speed up/aid the asylum process, however the Home Office no longer has access to them. Which has put an immense strain on resources. Coupled with staffing cuts etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would they need to travel to the UK, are they not safe from conflict within the EU?

Lorries fit 3 people in the front. The HGV driver could drive the doctor about to patients en route whilst the software developer uses his laptop on the third seat to develop software.

The problem with the UK is that it is dominated by a right wing media who will never admit that immigration is a net positive thing.

I am not sure why you are targetting me. I am a legal immigrant in America, studied here, working for more than half an decade and pay more taxes than the average American like VC.
It's the illegals who come here, don't pay taxes, enjoy social service benefits whilst contributing to crime. From what I hear immigration is a worse problem in EU/ UK with all the Muslim refugees coming in from middle east and taking their crime and 7th centure way of living to you folks.
