Yeah, agree with you JYAF. Whatever we do is going to be a trade off:
- Dropping Pogba so we have a more coherent double pivot behind Bruno (just imagine having Tielemans and Ndidi there!) means we're not utilising the most naturally gifted and creative player in our side, and have his wages rotting on the bench.
- Move to a 4-3-3 to get the best of Paul Pogba means you either have a much less effective Fernandes, who doesn't have the freedom to try those very ambitious passes, or again you have a world class player on the bench (though Pogba, Tielemans and Ndidi looks a much more coherent three).
I guess the resolution of the puzzle will result from a mixture of inertia and/or circumstances. Inertia: what's the path of least resistance? - quite possibly with one upgrade to DM you can make a big improvement to the current dynamic, without totally neutralising the issues, so Pogba is less of a liability in a double pivot and/or Bruno is less sucked back into midfield. Or circumstances: Pogba doesn't renew his contract and we replace him with a player who suits our system better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a tough call to make, why would you want to lose Fernandes or Pogba because you'd assume it significantly weakens your side in terms of quality, but it's the same conundrum with Coutinho a few years ago. Lose arguably the teams most gifted technical player who has a massive influence on a lot of games but have a more balanced side.
Anybody can afford lose their best players, but you need a manager who is strong enough to make that decision and have a recruitment team who you can be confident enough in to replace that player in the areas where the team needs strengthening. In United's case (and Liverpool's when Coutinho left), that wasn't a like-for-like replacement for the player, but rather improving the necessary areas that are weak.
The issue United would have, despite what looks like a good summer on paper, are you confident enough in your recruitment team to bring in the right calibre of player in the right areas should one of Pogba or Fernandes be moved on. Again, it takes a strong character to make those decisions and it takes a solid recruitment team to get that right. Unfortunately for you, I don't see Ole being that man who would have enough about him to make that decision, whereas a Conte or Zidane would.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ole may be lucky (in some respects) as that decision could be taken out of his hands if Pogba leaves on a free.
I do think Pogba is more naturally talented than Bruno but the latter, I think, suits United more in terms of playing a high intensity game.

Apparently we are in the market for a CDM in January and if we can't find one, next summer for sure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope to go we aren’t idiotic enough to spend anything over 30m on Declan rice- most overated player around.
There was a similar call to be made about whether signing Ronaldo destabilised our team / was inconsistent with our strategy. Fergie himself made some opportunistic moves and there are examples of it being worth it (e.g. bringing in Van Persie was to the detriment of Kagawa's career but history in its brutality doesn't care about that). And there can be coaches who are so fixated on the masterplan that they miss great opportunities. I'm not so sure buying Ronaldo fits into that 'worth ditching the strategy for' category. Anyway, the jury is out on that one and I don't have the energy to relitigate the argument.

I quite like him... he reads the game well and he'd be a specialist holding midfielder at least.
You might be right about the money though, they seem to grow on trees in Europe, and is he that much better than a player that'd cost half that? Need to see how he develops, I guess.

Simply put, no he’s not. So I wouldn’t even entertain paying even half of what the spammers will want.
Half of what WH will realistically settle for is probably DVDB/Fred transfer fee territory. That would be a bargain for a specialist player in the position we need, with lots of PL experience and effective at the top level for England, while still young enough to improve and have sell-on value. He's going to be overpriced, but not 100% overpriced!
Not so sure. He’s not a bad player, but I think he’s highly overvalued, he’s worth about half of the figures quoted, even with his England exploits
