Greenwood

He's nothing like a winger to me, and not perfect for CF.
So inside right, if they still exist, and told to work harder

posted on 27/10/21

Greenwood I think is a CF long term but should get games all along the front line to gain experience.

Cross for Cavani at Spurs last season.

posted on 27/10/21

he is not a winger in the classic sense but a wide forward for now. Very much like RVP was for arsenal in his development stage

i think he would be even better as the 2nd striker next to someone like cavani but I don't know if our squad or manager can accomodate 2 strikers

posted on 27/10/21

He does need to work harder when he plays wide though which is why a spell on the bench may not be a bad idea now. As MU52 says he could become an inside right and play it similarly to how Henry cut in from the left (I'm not for one second saying he's as good as Henry by the way!). I do think he's a great talent though and we should be looking to develop players like this who have a great eye for goal.

He can play either right at at CF but he hasn’t been great this season other than the odd goal.

I’ve said a few times I’d like to see Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho given a run as a 3 but we all know there is 2 chances of that.

He is a striker not a winger. Sadly Ronaldo coming back will hold Greenwood back a couple of years.

Ole could do this if he wanted to. If he has to placate Ronaldo he could say he's resting him for the CL and that he was signed for that and for the arduous December period.

I remember a nice cross from Greenwood (to Martial?) coming in from the left on a counter-attacking goal in our purple patch at the end of the 2019-20 season. But your point stands.

Greenwood isn't a winger. If he plays wide of centre, it's in that goal-scoring-from-wide-positions role that we associate with Ronaldo before he became more of a penalty box player. From that point of view, I don't think he HAS to be a centre forward.

He's an interesting player in that he's very smart and pretty mature in terms of his understanding of small pockets of space (good decision making on the attacking transition, good at picking passes and moving in the middle third) but not very impressive in his movement off the ball and some way behind (Dortmund's) Sancho in terms of picking pockets around the box and behind a master of the centre forward's art in terms of anticipation and movement in the box. There's some evidence of either great footballing intelligence or education, but also parts of his game that are much less refined.

tbh, whether he is a winger, cf, ss, inside forward, wide forward or whatever almost doesn't seem to matter in the grand scheme atm.

purely an academic conversation at this stage cos whatever he is and however good he can be will be limited by how the team is setup as a whole which is not very well

I'm guessing he was used mainly as a CF for the youth teams? Honestly haven't seen enough of him centrally but it does sound like he would eventually be better there. It's a shame Ronaldo coming has had an effect on his game time centrally, I genuinly felt the club were hoping to give him a lot of time there with Cavani this season. Which has had a knock on effect on Sancho on the right, reminds me a bit of when we all got excited about Kagawa playing behind Rooney for us to then get RVP and scuper those plans.

Think it was Brighton away for Bruno.

Thing is under a different manager the slate gets wiped clean I'd say. Perhaps we'll see something from some players we've not seen previously. Let's hope so anyway.

For example I know McT isn't rated by some but I think there's a solid squad player in there who'd be able to cover a lot of positions on the pitch. He just needs refining that's all and shown how to make himself available for a pass.

Iiiiiif we get Conte and he’s the hot 8/11 favourite at the moment he’s possibly the worst coach to have for a lazy player as he in his own words say he ‘kills’ players who don’t work hard enough

Will be interesting to see who survives the purge. Might be the making of young Greenwood.

Drop "vanity signing Ronaldo" and play Rashford LW, Greenwood CF and Sancho RW... There's your future and they good to go now so fack Ronaldo and play them

Nah, Conte isn’t stupid. He knows a talent when he sees one. Greenwood probably needs a manager like Conte to continue his education.

Dunno if you guys saw the recent comments from Leo Bonucci, but the Juve players were happy to see the back of Ronaldo.. he kills the "team ethos" coz he's such a diva. No coincidence that Juve went to shlt last year with Ronnie under a novice manager in Pirlo... Now the same is happening at United.... Players like Pogba and Ronnie playing for a clown like Ole wont work.... Only a matter of time until those 2 get Ole the boot

Conte will use at least one, possibly two, of Sancho, Rashford, Greenwood or Bruno as wing backs.

Of those I think Rashford would be good as he is very good at tracking back already so could very well succeed there. Not sure about Sancho - any regular Dortmund watchers that think he can do it?

Using any of those as wingbacks would be a sad waste of their talents.

He is a wide forward in a 4-3-3 just like Neymar was with Barcelona

Blaming Ronaldo is easy though. They're not doing better this season under Allegri either. I'm not saying Ronaldo is blameless but there's bigger issues at Juve and United than him. My main issue with Ronaldo at United, having signed him, is that we're not playing to his strengths. If we don't there's no point having him in the team really.

Fair point but the truth is..... Ronaldo hasn't made United better.... a CM and RB would have done that... so really, wants the point of an expensive 36 year old who is stopping young great players for Man United getting minutes in their best position ?..... shirt sales ???

….

We are not playing to his weaknesses either and that is why we look all over the place.

I think many here questioned Ronaldo over a DM for example. However, I don't think it's really fair to judge him based on how we've been playing so far. It's a Catch 22 situation with him maybe.
