Jorgi denied Reece of historic hat-trick...

Top 3 performers:
Christensen
Havertz
Hudson-Odoi

Leading the line is a thankless task and Kai was excellent in his industry in and out of possession, with the purpose of disrupting Newcastle's backline (especially when starting the press).
Constantly made himself available by showing for the ball with short play movements between the lines or long play movements behind the defence which were both useful in opening up space.
Won fouls or retained possession the times he did receive the ball with his back to goal. Worked his butt off throughout.
Throughly strong display. Goal would have been fitting, to cap-off a bright performance.

Callum similiarly picked up some great positions, short and long play movements out of possession were high-quality (Ziyech by contrast found himself offside time and time again due to never looking down the line and timing movements properly, just careless).
Knowing when to move inwards or outwards stretching play was smooth flowing between him and Chillwell, almost second nature.
Either initiated or was at the heart of most of our dangerous attacking moments/chances (connection with Chill & Kai impressive again).
Very rarely wasteful in possession (efficient) or turnedover/easily bumped off the ball (like the other attackers). A vital cog in attack.

AC passes through lines were sublime, every single one of them put the receiver in advantageous positions facing goal.
Dealt with everything that came his way off the ball, comprehensively had the measure of Wilson and co. Crucial proactive interventions led to retention of high tempo in opposition half.
Nothing more needs to be said about this smashing defender!

As we are clearly in groundhog day mode, let me repeat my previous post that I think the team always comes first and that to be a tad upset that Joghino took the penalty is a glass half empty tact.

Again Drogba in 2010, rightfully put in his place against Wigan.

With 9 mins left, yeah, James should have taken that, it was a free shot from 10 yards, not a freekick from 25. Would have been hacked off if I was James

Yep.
The opportunity will most likely never come along again for James to score a hat-trick.
This was a prime opportunity, Jorginho a bit selfish.

Ruthless is how you get to the top of the table 3 and five points clear of your nearest rivals

The penalty taker should take the penalty. James is a team player - I doubt he gave a second thought to it. Hat tricks are irrelevant. Winning is the only important issue.

That is how I see it.

O.P I think you’ll find Steve Watson of Everton scored a hat trick whilst playing fullback around 2004.

Weirdly in hindsight that might not have turned out to be the right call. We were always beating Wigan that game, but this incident might've played into the thinking when Drogba took, and missed, the last min penalty at Spurs (a) the following season. And winning that game would've been MASSIVE in the context of that season & how it might've developed differently.

I do agree with your prospective though - have a taker & stick with them. This isn't a bunch of lads in the park, they're at work when they play football, be professional

Nah tbf I’ve always thought it’s one of those weird things in football. When you get a penalty and the game is already won, shouldn’t have to be the main penalty taker. I don’t know why it’s so rare to happen. Would’ve been great to see James get a hat trick. Or the other game playing Malmö, where Rudiger won a pen at 3-0 after he was clearly chasing a goal all game. Just give it to Rudi!
