Reasons to be Cheerful - Part 1

I keep telling all the none Derby fans who criticise Rooney that he is doing an exceptional job with very few resources. They say he's thick to which I say you don't need to be clever to be a football manager. Leave the intellectual stuff for the pundits and their false number 9s. Let them talk real number 2s.

Rooney is demonstrating impressive loyalty to the club.

But I think you need more than that to overcome the points deduction(s).

I said earlier that if WR saved us from relegation he should be awarded the freedom of the City. If he saves us from relegation now, following a further nine-point deduction, he should get the Manager of the Year award (ie, in resect of all Leagues, Prem included).

The longer this goes on, the more he speaks, the more the team achieve, the higher his standing with me. Everything he says is so measured, calm, reassuring, common-sense, inspiring even (in spite of his unfortunate manner of address which is just one of those things).

I have to admit that I lost faith in him during that abysmal run towards the end of last season. In spite of all the difficulties I felt that a better manager could and should have got more out of those players but now I'm guessing that confidence levels were at too low an ebb for anyone to overcome.

But his recruitment against all the restrictions and his team selection which I have often questioned but not any more (what do I know for goodness sake!) show what a fine reader of the game and assessor of Derby's needs he is.

Good on 'im!

I don’t know if Wayne Rooney is the right manager for us in League One. He doesn’t need Derby County and no one would blame him if he walked away.

But right now I don’t want any else to manage us there and if he wants it he’s absolutely earned the right to try and get us back up.

He's doing a fantastic job. I think most of us would not have said he was management material and had the same impression of him as the fans of other clubs: that he isn't the smartest, a bit of a yob, whatever. But I think it does him a great disservice to suggest that all he is doing is motivating the lads. I've watched the "We Are Derby" episodes and he is a thoughtful coach who does go into the detail and subtlety of the process. We may not all agree with some of it, such as the Chuckle Brothers goal-kick routine, but he has a clear idea of what he wants to do tactically that shows a football intelligence. I was completely against his appointment as were many but I reckon I was completely wrong about that.

As I point out to his detractors, he has spent more than half his relatively short life in football. He has worked with some of the best managers in football. If only a bit rubbed off it should still make him better than most Championship managers. I was never against his appointment, especially as I predicted it long before it happened. I would have been glad of anyone to replace Cocu.

Another reason to be cheerful: Arsenal 3 Derby 5 this evening. 2 more for Plange, 2 for Sibley and 1 for Connor Dixon.

Yes but it seems another of our brightest prospects, a centre-half, has been snatched away by Brighton. That's three now inc Gordon and Delap!

Yes, Heb
Plange and Sibs looked a good combo from the highlights.
Looking forward to the full 90 tomorrow.

Another reason to be cheerful, we aren't playing today in this foul weather.

I saw the U23s highlights. Good goals against a good Arsenal team. Pleasing to see Sibley playing like he can once more... UTR

I too think Rooney is doing an excellent job.....but can we afford him?

Answer...we can if he does the impossible and keeps us up.

I thought both Sibley and Plange looked useful. Whether they can hack it in the Championship remains to be seen but I think they're both worthy of getting a place on the bench ....another reason to be cheerful...

Sibley has struggled to have any impact this season. He's quite unique in the way he plays so I don't think he fits easily into the team. He's always had a goal in him but he needs the team to be set up to suit his strengths. At present we are a team that needs to scrap for everything. It's been noticeable to me that since Morrison was replaced we have done much better. I don't dislike Morrison but like Sibley he is a bit of a luxury player. Some of us would say the same about Lawtence but he has been working hard in my opinion and producing some end product. Knight and Thompson have no frills or fancy tricks but they don't half bring a lot to the team in other ways. I reckon Sibley and Morrison might struggle to be more than sub options for the time being.

I recommend watching the whole game, Terry.
Superb performance. In short Arsenal's starlets just couldnt match our energy anywhere on the pitch.
Would be wrong to single out individuals, but some strong partnerships on show, Bardell & Cashin at the back, Robinson & Watson in MF and Plange & Sibley up front.
Always enjoyable when your team makes it's tackes, wins the vast majority of 2nd balls and can hold the ball up front.
Plange a strong candidate to be the next u23 to get the step-up.

Unfortunately Plange cannot step up - cf WR's lament in Derbyshire Live. It really is ridiculous and shows what a shower the EFL is.

Not read it. Can Cashin ? He was in a similar situation to Thompson

"Derby were under a transfer embargo at the time Plange signed for the under-23s, making him ineligible for the first team as it stands." (from Derbys Live)

This suggests Cashin should not fall within the scope of the embargo since it was relaxed a bit when we accepted the 9 point deduction. I believe that we are now allowed 25 in our squad as opposed to the original 23 but Thompson has now taken up one of these slots (and good on him for doing so.) That leaves precious little wriggle room but you would have thought that Plange could take up that last slot - but apparently he can't. Go figure.
