Forshaw - Good signing, I’d probably extend his contract one year.
Roberts - He and Cooper get a lot of unfair criticism…he’s still young and his value is higher than when we bought him.
Augustin - WTF!
Meslier - Definitely has a great future ahead, still think he would be better if we had a mentor for him.
Struijk - Big fan of this lad.
Rodrigo - Not impressed given what we paid for him, will be lucky to get a third back if he left.
Llorente - Maybe justifies his price tag, don’t think we lose much if Struijk or Cresswell stepped in.
Raphinha - Will leave in the summer…and what a signing that was.
Koch - He’s just not Ben White is he! Will have a tough time getting back in when fit.
Harrison - Missing Alioski…good signing though.
Firpo - Pants down!
James - I think he’ll be good, but why did we feel we had to spend so much?

You forgot one: Marcelo Bielsa (genius signing and get-out-of-jail-free card!)

If we're counting the coaches, who are at least as significant to the club's progress as players, we'd have to add Thomas Christiansen and the Heck (not exactly brilliant).

So that's about sixty players and coaches since May 2017, when Orta was appointed - four seasons and a bit.

Fifteen signings a season on average? Is that extravagant? A lot of those names above are also youth development signings.

It's true he's signed a good few duds by the looks of that list.

MARCELO BIELSA - Fuqing fabulous!!!

These players - Brilliant:
Forshaw
Alioski
Klich
White
Meslier
Struijk
Llorente
Raphinha
Harrison
Gelhardt

Wait and see (but look quality to me):
Koch
James
Greenwood
Summerville
Drameh
Caprile
Roberts

The rest: Duds.

The MB signing puts Orta massively
in the positive column. MB unlocked
the genius that is KP. Among other
things such as Prem life again.

Dodged a bullet from Swansea and got shot between the eyes by Man U 😂
Seriously though, my only issue with James is that he cost double what he should have.
Firpo looks a complete waste of money, would struggle in the Championship.
Rodrigo another that hasn’t shown good value.
Jonty I’d like to see a new signing evaluation post in the Orta/Bielsa era.

Had real hopes for Matty Bogusz, doing OK at Ibiza but I doubt he has a future with us.

Great minds think alike, then, Batty?

On balance I think Orta's done a pretty good job but there can be no doubt he's signed quite a few duds at both junior and senior levels and that he's negotiated some fantastic deals for other clubs.

Neither Rodrigo nor James seem good value for money at this point. He's also signed several who were crocked in some way or another before they signed, such as Koch and Llorente.

In my humble, JKA qualifies of worst signing of all time (apart from maybe Josh Brolin): a truly unfit/crocked and preposterously overpriced DUD!

Perhaps the quality/quantity of Orta's signings in the Championship are less important measures as to his competence than those signed since we came up? He had more money to spend and the club was a far more attractive proposition to prospective players.

Didn't he sign a zillion players in a speculative frenzy during his first year? He didn't have a Bielsa to check his extravagance at that point. That would distort this list as a measure of his competence.

Re the coaches, I'd say a TC and a Heck do not shift the scales when measured against a Bielsa! You could chuck on a Venables, a Reid, a Warnock, a fat Scottish geezer who lost the plot whose name I can't be bothered to look up, and twenty years' worth of other also-rans before they'd even begin to move!

Jazz, I liked TC, but wasn't he the one who exiled Klich, had was completely unsupported by Orta? Remember everytime he was asked about signings - Ask Victor, Ask Victor etc.

Bielsa was available at the time, yet Orta chose these 2.

If you want to focus on teh Prem, let's do just that

Raphinha
Llorente
Rodrigo
Koch
James
Costa
Harrison
Meslier
Firpo
Gelhardt
Klaessen

all first teamers we've signed since promotion, that's over £150 mill in 12 months, that's maybe reason why we've seen a decline in sheer numbers of players signed, its because we've already spent a fortune.

I would say the best success from that is Meslier, who was of course originally signed before the Prem and had Kiko not been banned by FA, would never have broken through that season and so might still be kicking his heels in U23s right now.

Raphinha is a great player.

Harrison has been a very good player for us, but since signing perm for us has gone off the boil.

Llorente is now after 12 months finally able to put a run together BUT that run is one of worst in our Prem history.

Koch is really hard right now to say has been a good signing when he's only played 15 or so times over last year.

Gelhardt, a peanuts signing, he could be a star, we could see him loaned out, we have no idea.

Klaessen, again we have no idea as he never gets first team time.

James, huge transfer fee for us, has not delivered on that yet at all.

Rodrigo, strange signing at the time, still strange when without our striker, we dont play him as a striker.

Firpo, complete waste of money so far, no pace, can't pass, looks like chicken in headlights.

I think you've got Rodrigo, James, Koch, Firpo and Costa that cost us over 100 mill that could have been far better spent on:

A proper replacement/challenger for Bamford
A creative midfielder
A left back that is good as a left back

Not sure if he's unique in this way but Bielsa doesn't use the loan market in the way you imply, loan out to give minutes to prepare players for the first team. Sure fire sign that Bielsa does not see a future for players at the club. Way to put them in the shop window.
We have Temenuzhkov, Caprile, De Bock, Edmondson, McCalmont, Bogusz, Casilla, Davis, Poveda and Costa out on loan, none of them will return.
I can see no point in Gelhardt going out on loan, he has already made 19 appearances at Championship level and proved more than ready.
I see him getting more and more frustrated and whacking in a transfer request, if we lose him due to Bielsa's intransigence, I will be spitting feathers.

I'm not sure I specific a way of using This he loan, just saying that he'll either be a star (unlikely if not given minutes) or be loaned out and as you say if its a loan, we rarely, if ever, see them come back and challenge.

Bielsa keeps what he sees as the best at the club to provide opposition in training, but they rarely get a proper chance at first team football.

There is an article on Leeds newsnow suggesting the Newcastle owners want Orta to be their DoF.
This could be clickbait but if Orta is offered treble his wages for example to leave Leeds and go to Newcastle it will be interesting to see how much Orta really loves the club and can he resist the riches offered to him by the geordies.

If I was Orta and Newcastle are offering x3 then of course I'd go! He's a professional, not a fan. Professionals in his position must make out like they're fans, just as Marathe talks us up, but they're businessmen in the business. Movers and shakers use any tool at their disposal.

150 mill in 12 months? Phew! It's pretty shocking when it's put like that, cos we're really scrabbling at the minute.

Your point is then that we're in the scheisse because recruitment has been so poor? Signing Bielsa, Meslier and Raphinha, and keeping Phillips, has masked Orta's incompetence? Bielsa must also bear some responsibility, as he very honestly admits. And Radrizzani is selling off chunks of stock just to fund that 150 mill and keep us afloat in the meantime...

Remember when O'Leary took over from Graham? He harvested the good work with youth development set up by Wilko - his "babies" - used to drive me mad when he said that!

Is that what Bielsa must do now, this season, rather than next? Cos if we've splaffed 150 mill since coming up there sure as hell isn't going to be any more big money signings, whether or not they are overrated and overpriced duds (which many of them seem to be!) Therefore bringing through the U23s must be the way forward. Why isn't Gelhardt starting then? Because Bielsa is sticking with the seniors, even if they're not doing the business. Saturday was a case in point with Roberts on before Gelhardt.

I'm not sure if Bielsa isn't signalling that he's had enough with that article. I don't want him to leave because of how brilliant he's been, but he must adapt to changing conditions. Ferguson went with the youth and it paid off handsomely. Maybe Bielsa's too long in the tooth to change his ways?

Jeez...it's truly gut-wrenching. When I watch us playing like a L1 side in a cup game against a PL club, it feels like I'm a smackhead who can't find a fix.
