Pogba

Can’t see anyone buying him in January when he’s free to move for nothing in the summer. Only way he leaves in January is if we pay him out of his contract, and even we as a club are not that stupid.
If I was a manager at a top club, I wouldn’t be looking to sign him anyway.

That table doesn’t show how good players are at pressing; it shows how frequently they have pressured an opponent this season. The stat could otherwise be described as ‘Runs After Opponents Out Of Possession A Lot’. By the nature of Ole’s instructions and of the players’ roles within the system, it’s also going to be heavily biased in favour of midfielders.

Effective pressing requires an understanding of and adherence to triggers, dynamic reading of teammates’ and opponents’ positions, shaping runs correctly to limit access and press opponents into the areas the strategy requires, and engaging effectively.

For example, from that graph, Fred might look like by far and away the most useful presser in the United squad, but he often misreads coordinated presses, going to close down a player he should stand off leaving acres of room behind him for the opposition to exploit in their attacking transition.

Better metrics would be involvement in presses which led to turnovers, and proportion of presses engaged in which led to turnovers. I expect that those stats would show that Bruno is the most effective presser in the squad.

Real have said they like to have a player sign a pre contract agreement before offering peanuts to the parent club for a move in Jan.

Lets hope they do this with Pogba

Isn't gegenpressing about pressing and winning the ball back quickly after losing possession, rather than a blanket press all over the pitch?

I read somewhere that Rangnick's teams, even when doing this, have often been happy to sit deep without the ball.

I see Pogba let his man go after he loses possession often far too often.

I think there is a chance that Pogba goes in January. More likely he will sign a pre-contract agreement and move in the summer. If he stays until the summer, I am sure he will still play for us, albeit he will likely start less games than he otherwise would if he were staying. You'd hope that VDB would jump above him in the pecking order (form considered).

It would have been best for all if we'd either got him tied down to a new deal or shipped him out before he entered the final year of his contract. He'll go for a free in the summer and I'm not expecting much from him between now and then.

Rangnick also likes his players to pass the ball forwards and to do it quickly. Pogba likes 5 or 6 touches every time he gets the ball. He's a pressing team's dream. The only problem is the pressing team whose dream it is is the opposition.

I'm not a Pogbite (hope that takes off 😂) but I think some of the stick he gets maybe (note I said maybe) unwarranted.

Of course I agree he hasn't lived up to expectations overall, but he has been very good for us in patches and often gets slated if we lose whikwt having a good game. Maybe ethe price tag and expectation?

As a player who came with a big rep surely it must be disheartening for him to have , in essence, "wasted" a key part of his career at a club that has been in turmoil (whilst having the resources not to allow that. I mean we are not Burnley).

For players who want to be greats I believe trophies/medals are the key over wages and endorsements (both which would increase way beyond if you were winning medal and trophies in terms of bonuses and advertising deals etc)

Pogba is a "soft lad" imho. He hasn't the mentality of a Ronaldo who was a "slave" when he wanted to go to bigger and better things. Or a Rooney who publicly challenged where we were at and wanyed assurances. He has himself not caused any trouble or grief (his brother and agent another matter) and is well liked by everyone if reports are to be believed.

He is getting slated for his contract situation, and probably would be moreso of he came out and said I want out because we are chit and don't have a plan and I want to win things. But maybe should.

I hope RR sits him down and says right let's achieve X but from you I need Y. You have the talent now we as a club have a plan.

End of season we are singing his praises and he signs or walks with no qualms.

Same with Jesse

this is also nonsense. relative to passes made pogba has fewer touches of the ball than eg mctominay, and he is also one of the best progressers of a ball (dribbles + progressive passes) in europe.

He can do it though, like Mbappe's goal in the world cup final or Mason's against Leeds. I think he just mentally drifts off for periods of the game.

That's because he usually gets caught in possession before he can make a pass! Have you ever seen Pogba play?! If so, then stop being so dismissive. It's clearly an issue with his game

I’ve read on a couple of occasions now that Ralf will angrily drop players if they make too many sideways/backwards passes.

Love it.

I don't think you've ever actually watched us. LVG paid bonuses for sideways and backwards passes.

Mctominay side ways pass will struggle imho

Pogba is far more capable to pass the ball forwards because he can pass forwards. Mct is so limited in his passing ability I think he will struggle. Pogba With proper coaching could do well
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think that it is time to draw a line under Pogba. I can't see him signing a new deal, nor do I think that he is worth the wage he will want. Get rid and lets get a top DM in there and see if VDB can command a starting spot. It will be interesting to see if Garner gets a chance next season.

Pogba's after £500k a week to sign the contract if the papers are to be believed.

£500k a week. I can see it making sense for a PSG, where they can balance it against the lack of a transfer fee, but it looks like an expensive indulgence for us unless Ralf and the next manager can make him a consistent game changer.
