Actually, Ten Hag will have a chance to get a good look at him before joining the club in the summer.

Needs to be added to the OP I'd say.

As far as I can remember there has been one goal Henderson has let in that he should have saved.

He certainly commands his box better than DDG and the defence is always less edgy with him.

I am not sure where the dislike of him from many of our fans on here comes from to be honest.

Based on their full seasons in the PL he was considered far better than Ramsdale by Sheff U fans. Maybe he just needs regular football a decent PL side and he’d flourish like Ramsdale is now.

Think how much Ramsdale would flourish at a decent side!

To be fair, I think a lot of our fans would like to see him given a chance over DDG and I don't see evidence of widespread hate for him, even if a lot of us think the jury is out on whether he will be truly top class. There are a lingering few, however, who still see the occasional acrobatic Dave-save as evidence that he's a far better keeper.

DDG has been pretty good so far this season in what he's done but I read a thread on Twitter recently comparing him to Allison. That stated that whilst DDG is a better shot stopper Allison is more pro-active in ensuring the shot doesn't come in (coming out for crosses, sweeping etc). I know you can use metrics for any narrative really but it did make sense.

Like SAF said of Les Sealey "He's not the better keeper but he thinks he is and that's important". Perhaps Hendo's confidence and willingness to command his box would suit us better as we move on?

This make sense, would be a chance for Ten Hag to get a good look at him before he comes in the summer.

Who is Ajax current keeper, is he injured or something or just not very good? No point Hendo going if he's going to swap our bench for theirs.

Isn't Ajax's No1 in jail for 12 months for some doping thing?

I’d be surprised if Ralph let’s him go tbh, he’s a better fit for the system he likes to play. Only takes one DDG mistake or injury and who knows?

Some football stats geek on Twitter made a bunch of pie charts that frankly I didn't fully understand comparing De Gea with various other top goalkeepers (Ederson, Allisson, Neuer, etc.) based on a bunch of metrics relating to passing length, passing success, interceptions, etc. The point wasn't to show good vs bad keepers, but different characteristics. There were slight differences between all of the other keepers, but they were all in the same ballpark, whereas De Gea's chart looks radically different from all of the others.

I just think he's a fine goalie who probably belongs to a different era.

The one I saw was like that with the main take out being De Gea is below average at stopping the shots actually happening but above average in saving them. I much prefer the old fashioned scores out of a 100 method than those chart things though!

DDG has been arguably our best player this season. He also earns 350k a week.

You don't bench a player playing really well. You also can't bench a keeper on that kind of money.

Whether you agree with it or not....the club by giving him that deal have left us with no choice. Thankfully he's found some forma again.

Wonder if we're reaching a point where shot stopping is practically irrelevant when assessing the value of a goalkeeper to champions league level sides who are looking to dominate the ball, similar to how defensive ability in top fullbacks isn't really taken into account anymore.

Ten Hag to
@volkskrant
about a possible next move:

"I believe I'm ready. I would gladly accept that challenge. But it's not that I'm hunting for it, if this step doesn't arrive I won't say my career has failed. But I believe I have enough skills to accept the challenge."

He's practically asking for us to make a move for him.

Henderson reminds me of pickford... better in his own head than in real life.

De Gea for me every time.

Didn't he used to call him Coco, even during that unbelievable run when he was basically keeping us in games on his own? He's a strange character.

Agree with this. He’s a decent keeper, not as good as DDG though

I’m not convinced either of them are the right keeper for us. I do understand why people would prefer to see more of Henderson in this current set up, though, even it he isn’t as good a keeper as De Gea. It will be interesting to see whether Rangnick will look to give Henderson some opportunities.

Thinking you're better than you really are seems like a positive attribute for a goalkeeper, where both having confidence and projecting it are important.

I think it's true that De Gea is a better goalkeeper on his own terms than Henderson. There may not be many or any old-skool stoppers than De Gea, while Henderson isn't up there with the best of the modern sweeper keepers who excel with the ball at their feet. But I don't think it necessarily follows that De Gea is a better keeper for our team. If he does certain things badly (or not at all) that are important parts of our style of play, that shouldn't be discounted by the fact that he can pull of a save or two that some keepers wouldn't. As an analogy, there's no argument that Zlatan was a by far a better player than Pedro, but in the tactical innovation deployed by Barcelona, it was more useful playing Pedro (an inferior goal scorer) than Ibrahimovic and resulted in the team scoring more goals.

Twitter thread by a gk analyst on how henderson's shot prevention work (stopping crosses, sweeping) is more valuable than de geas shot stopping work

And another by the same guy about how de gea's shot stopping doesn't make up for his lack of shot prevention

Thing with keepers is that it’s not just the tactical fit, they need to have the right mentality to play for a massive club. Despite his flaws, De Gea’s proven he can. Henderson I’m not so sure about. I’d be fine with him getting games to see if he can be a better fit than De Gea, but we should be looking to get a better, and more suitable, keeper than both. Who that may be I couldn’t say, however.
