Team for Arsenal

I think he brought Drameh on because he will play Saturday. Struijk was a new injury picked up in training last Friday so may not be returning. Can’t see anyone else back so my guess would be

Meslier

Drameh Ayling llorente Dallas

Forshaw

Raphinha Roberts Klich harrison

James

He probably did and I think your line up looks more likely.

I would understand why he persists with James up front even though I probably wouldn't but can't understand why he will play Ayling out of position, Llorente on his weaker side, and Drameh ahead of Cresswell.

Cresswell has looked much better with his first team minutes than Drameh for me.

If Struijk is fit I expect he will play LCB too, not as a 4 like I would.

Cody has thrived on his relationship with Summerville, he knows where he will be, not sure that relationship is there with Rapha.

Looks like 'Jamie Shackleton, Junior Firpo, Rodrigo, Patrick Bamford, Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips, Robin Koch and Pascal Struijk' are set to miss Saturday's 5.30 clash with the Gooners.

oh joy

for me

If injury to James is true, I'd like to see....

Meslier

Ayling Cresswell Llorente Dallas

Forshaw

Raphinha Roberts Klich Harrison

Gelhardt

...with presumably the youngest bench ever put together for a PL game?

Bit worried about Gelhardt managing 90. He seemed gassed after about 10 mins vs. City. Seemed unable to make the sprints for breaks. Ah well. BAck against the walls time.

Klaesson, Cresswell, Hjelde, Jenkins, Bate, McKinstry, Greenwood, McCarron, and Dean on the bench?

Cresswell would almost certainly play LCB if he plays. Its where he played all of last year with Casey next to him. He's right footed, but he seems comfortable with both, which is a handy trait for a CB. Sort of like Maguire in that he's a right footer that tends to play left side.

No more square pegs, play who we have in each position.

Ayling
Cresswell
Llorente
Dallas

Raphinha
Klich
Bate
Harrison

Given that Bate clearly isn't deemed ready for the bench, why do you think he is going to throw him into the starting XI? Clearly he sees Jenkins as more ready for his system right at this moment.

Bielsa doesn't see Bate as one of the top 5 or 6 players coming through at the moment. Not sure why but Bate has to do more to impress him. I can't see him getting minutes anytime soon unless something has changed in the last few weeks.

Looks like the only decision left is between Drameh & Cresswell. I would 100 go for Cresswell. I suspect Bielsa will go Drameh for the reasons Kebab has pointed out.

This for sure. Ayling is so much better at RB

I think that fringe argument that our small squad
is not an issue, has been well and truly squashed.

Our potential side vs. Arsenal (bar Raph) looks
like a mid-table Championship team. If they get
a point against them it'll be a xmas miracle.

Fear is Arsenal & Liverpool bag a boatload and
our GD becomes a millstone that could sink us.

The one thing that really disappointed me on Tuesday was how Raphinha went missing in the 2nd half just didn’t want to know, need more from our best player

There's no doubt that the small squad is a huge problem right now.

But how beneficial has it been for the previous 3 years?

It's clearly a risk/reward strategy and for 3 years it was part of massive rewards for us as a club.

Thing is we don't need too many signings. Two may see us over the line. It's midfield where we are desperate.

Maybe the limitations on MB's small squad approach
is exactly that: three years max. Then it's an issue.
Regardless, and no denying it's been a great three
years, it's a huge issue now.

Bielsa is setting the record straight on transfers. He wants bodies, but they must be better than what we have. You can't say fairer than that, obviously not happy with how it's being reported.

So let's assume that come the end of the transfer window all are back, line up of Meslier, Ayling, Llorente, Cooper, Firpo, Phillips, Raphinha, Forshaw, Dallas, Harrison and Bamford. Bench of Kleasson, Shackleton, Struijk, Koch, Klich, James, Rodrigo, Roberts and Gelhardt. The squad looks very strong and more than good enough for this division. Where do you strengten?

Els, you don't worry about a potential luxury of riches,
you get players in, in the window and improve. There's
no guarantee that all of those players listed get back.
Or that someone else gets crocked in the meantime.

posted on 16/12/21

Of course the club has to worry about a potential luxury of riches. What a silly thing to say. They can't just sign 5 new players, and then have no plan what to do with them when all players are fit. There needs to be a plan, and with new signings will come new promises for game time, route into the team etc etc

Why we are best looking for players like John Swift this January. Cheap, doing well the level below, versatile in midfield, and won't have any expectations to be starting week in week out.

Also, on the Bate front. I get the impression that Bielsa really rates Bate, but he believes in players needing time to get up to speed. He trusts Jenkins, because Jenkins has had three years playing his system, and is adept at it. Wouldn't surprise me if Bate has been told to expect no game time this season, with the aim to get him more involved next. Same with Gelhardt last year.

The problem is Batty is that the management will be thinking exactly what I said, get all the players back fit and we have more than enough. If we panic sign players we could end up signing players who don't tick the better than what we already have box, we may still go down and end up with a huge wage bill and players we cannot shift.
