I wouldn't say he's out of his depth, he provided double digits in assists and goals last season. I think with him the quality is there but he just lacks the consistency.

I didn't see anything new, throughout his career with us he's been good against much weaker opposition, but when the quality goes up most of the time he is just floundering. We've seen this before in the League Cup when the opposition isn't up to it - he made his reputation against weaker opposition but hasn't been able to do it at all reliably at the top level now he has to deliver in the Premier League.

The intensity of the PL seems to be just too much for him. We all wish it would change as he has a wand of a left foot but to date there has never been much sign that he will ever be able to step up on a consistent basis.

So to the question, is there a reason we can't keep him for squad depth? or do you feel we can do better even for that?

He's on a very high salary for a bench player, maybe we could get £25m for him in January after this performance.
I know that's a £47m loss but that's a sunk cost that has already been lost. If Aubameyang does leave and we can't get anybody else in during the January window then it might be better to keep him - but it's a big risk if we turn down the chance to offload him.

We should be able to get £25m for him easily. I think we would struggle to get a better player as second choice but as you said he's on high wages so that would be a problem.

I wonder what his wages are, surely its not in Laca or Auba range

It's £140k a week I believe, that's not insane but we are not Man City so for a player who is not getting a sniff of the first team it is way too much. Arteta is hinting that players like Nketiah are outworking him in training (hence coming on before Pepe in the PL recently) which is also a major concern.
